Another Food Taboo Spinoff: Bacon

We're not supposed to eat bacon? I have been eating it very weekend for the past month!! How come doctors don't give pregnant women a complete list of food to avoid?

Should I be worried?

I eat it about once every 2 weeks. I think ppl don't eat it bc of the nitrates, but I"m not sure. My doc didn't say anything about bacon either.

I never heard of not eating bacon either and freaked a little when I saw girls talking about it. I'm a believer than anything in moderation is fine (with the exception of drinking and smoking of course)

I agree. I think people tend to group it along with other meats that have nitrates. My doctor never mentioned it either. I've eaten it, but if I remember I look for the bacon without nitrates.

I eat it on occasion. I don't think it's that big of a deal. Everything in moderation. Chat Icon

Re: Another Food Taboo Spinoff: Bacon

people make themselves crazy with what is "allowed". it becomes almost an unhealthy obsession.

bacon has nitrates which in LARGE quantities is not good for ANYONE. every weekend is fine, as are most foods. i went through a phase where i had turkey bacon every day for weeks--i asked my doctor and he gave me the "will you stop worrying about nothing" speech!

everything in moderation.

I love bacon. And I've been craving all bad things fried or fatty like Mickey D's sausage biscuits for the past few weeks.

Is this fairly normal?

Re: Another Food Taboo Spinoff: Bacon

The only reason I avoided nitrates with my first pregnancy was that they gave me severe migraines and I can't take anything good to make them go away! This pregnancy I have a headache every day and a migraine every 2-3 days, so I think I will just eat bacon anyway since avoiding it hasn't helped!

Re: Another Food Taboo Spinoff: Bacon

I'm avoiding all heavily processed meats... including bacon and hotdogs...

I'm doing this becuase of the nitrites / nitrates.

So, being the german girl that I am, I can't stop eating ham, sausages, or bacon... that would be like ripping my heart out! The ham and sausages I get at the german butcher shop (made daily by themselves, never preservatives)

I go shopping at fairway in plainview every week and discovered applegate farms organic bacon... it's smoked over applewood and has no funky preservatives...

OMG, it tastes 10 times better than regular bacon Chat Icon sooooo goooood.
That, lettuce, tomato, and bakery white bread with mayo Chat Icon

go out and get celebrate with applegate farms Chat Icon Chat Icon
