I had a small, inexpensive wedding to LI standards. I still feel I had a great wedding. I had a hall, a wedding dress, photographer, etc...

i agree, but to have a wedding in a budget is really not the norm.

i agree, but to have a wedding in a budget is really not the norm. this is why DH and I decided to go the small & intimate route. we paid for 85-90% of our wedding and while we left some people off the guest list, our closest friends and family were all there with us. we had a fantastic wedding and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Re: spinoff from my own post, do you think weddings
at first i thought my hall was really expensive and possibly overpriced - but then when we had the wedding i realized that the food was so quality - it was like restaurant food - and the amount they give you - really, it is equivilent to a lot more than what we paid per head - i mean, having that amount of food and kind of food at a restaurant would run you more than what we paid per person -- and i was so thrilled with the service and quality - everything surpassed my expectations so i really couldn't say that they charged us too much. i mean, maybe other places that don't give you as much or as quality would be different but we were so happy with our place.
...it was flowerfield, by the way lol.
ETA: i don't know why we pay more here vs. the rest of the country - i mean, if you think about it there is more money on long island overall than a lot of other places - it costs a lot to live here and we have a lot so it makes sense that we would have more $ weddings - other places that have weddings like we do are certain areas of connecticut which are very similar economically to here --- and certain parts of california which are very similar to here $ wise too. i guess that's why?

I think weddings are like anything else- you can have them as economical as you like or as extravagant as you want. The main difference about where we are is that the long island culture is a flashy one and there's a tendency towards keeping up with the Jones'. People don't NEED to get married in a pricey catering hall, they choose to. There are cheaper alternatives, but it's all a matter of personal preference.
