Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
While watching King of Queens, DH and I were discussing how mostly everything on TV is some type of reality show.
Are we that boring that we need to inject ourselves into someone else's fabricated existence to amuse ourselves?
I don't know about you, but when I watch TV, I want to see something funny, entertaining or dramatic, not a phony reality show....
And I really miss King of Queens.....

I LOVE that show. I'm happy that we still have the reruns. But you're absolutely right.

Re: Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
Nope, they are not obsolete.
Mondays on CBS from 8-10PM is all sitcoms
Weds on FOX from 8-9PM is all sitcoms
Thursday on NBC from 8-10PM all sitcoms
Its just more people are choosing the higher rated reality. Don't worry, sitcoms are still around and do great ratings. In fact Two & Half Men on CBS does a solid 6.0 Rating in A2554 according to Feb ratings for national average(which is stronger than most dramas)

Re: Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
It's funny you say that. DH and I joke that everytime we turn the tv on, it's a repeat of King of Queens. We never watched the show before and always comment on how unfunny we think it is and why it's ALWAYS on. I guess I've found its fans!
I think the days of hokey, laugh-track-infused sitcoms are over. I think sitcoms are smarter (The Office, Ugly Betty, etc) and have a different look and feel to them.
We tivoed a bunch of older stuff once.. like Golden Girls, Night Court, etc. stuff we loved as kids and thought HOW did we think this was funny at the time?!?

Re: Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
I think that while sitcoms no longer seem to be the main focus of the major networks, there are some excellent ones on. Personally, I love How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory. Back to You is cute as well, not to mention Scrubs, My Name is Earl, and 30 Rock. I would much rather watch shows like this than reality shows. I like my dramas as well, but we all need some laughter in our lives.

I sure hope not, I love sitcoms!! This is probably the reason why I don't watch much TV anymore, where I used to be a boob-tube junkie.

Re: Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
I love sitcoms. Love just watching a half hour show that keeps me entertained for 30 mins, without having some big plot or story line. I hate dramas (other than Lost), and have to say I am a fan of reality shows simply b/c they don't have huge plots and are usually not too complicated to follow (I hate thinking hard at the end of the day).
But I do love sitcoms more than anything!

Yeah, not a fan....I LOVE How I Met Your Mother....
I remember growing up in the 80s with tons of funny sit coms.
I miss the recent ones quite a bit...Friends, Frasier. Seinfeld, There is nothing that good on these days

How I met your Mother, we have watched since day one. It is a great show, hoping people finally realize this.
Also a huge fan of the Office. Those are pretty much the only two current sitcoms I like. I used to like Scrubs but it went down hill IMO recently.

I feel the same way, I don't know why it just irks me. There are three women in my office who are always singing the theme song together and talking about how funny it is, it drives me crazy!
But then again I LOVE scrubs, DH and I totally LOL during that show and I'm sure many people find its humor annoying and stupid.

I LOVE 30 Rock, Scrubs and The Office!!!
I wish there were more family friendly evening shows like there were back in the 80s & 90s...like Full House and such. I guess those types of shows are now found on the cable channels.

I've only recently started watching sitcoms again (besides reruns at night like King of Queens) and only 2:
Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother!

Re: Are sitcoms becoming obsolete?
yes, they are- ive been saying for years that there are no good writers left in hollywood. even with a lot of movies- theyre all remakes of something from years ago
plus, i think it must cost less to make reality shows...

I have the DVD collection but still prefer to watch it on cable. Too lazy to whip out the DVDs. Love the girls!
I always say when I go on vacation we have to watch the Golden Girls at night, b/c it always seems to be on at night wherever we are.

I LOVE sitcoms!!!! Especially Seinfeld and King of Queens. Too bad I did not discover KOQ until after it was over... I watch some reality but I prefer old school sitcoms for sure.
