Re: University of Phoenix

Well, my undergrad courses (UOP and Unversity of St Leo) transfer over to Dowling with no problems at all...

UOP is a real school, you are just taken the courses online. NYS has many online classes along with many other schools (U of St Leo)

Re: University of Phoenix

It's accredited, so the credits from there should transfer to any other school, but since they don't offer many in-person programs, the degrees are apparently still looked down upon a little bit by people who don't realize how difficult online courses can be! I teach online graduate courses through SUNY schools, and I would recommend the SUNY online programs (see www.sln.suny.edu for a list of courses and programs). The benefit to the SUNY courses (other than cheaper tuition) is that the transcript does not usually list that the course was taken online, so no one will ever know (unless your address is LI and you're taking courses through Buffalo and they make that connection!).

It may be because people assume that online courses are easier.

For the record - they aren't!

That and people say that it doesn't take much to get accepted, that you basically just sign up. But I've never looked into their application processes myself, so who knows!

Re: University of Phoenix

Ive taken online courses when I was still enrolled in Dowling- and I know first hand that online courses are far from easy (IMO- they are more difficult)

I just like the convenience of online courses..

I have about a year left of my undergrad- but with working full time and having a 2.5 yr old- I cant find that time to get my *** to school- so now I'm looking into online courses..

I don't know if Ill ever use/need my degree because ultimately I just wanna stay home with my kids- but I would love to at least say I have it...

Re: University of Phoenix

I suspect that it also depends on the field you're in and the company you're interviewing with. I had looked into Marketing programs with them. When I later ended up in some larger corporations through buyouts I found that they not only wanted advanced marketing degrees, they also wanted them from specific schools. Some companies are specific on the background education they want, but if that's the case, it doesn't really matter if it's on-line or brick and mortar if it's not the school the hiring company prefers.

Re: University of Phoenix

I work in for-profit education and I think that the repuation of online schools are changing. It's becoming more and more acceptable for students to do online programs. Especially for non-traditional students.

I have just decided to start my MBA through Kaplan University (just like a Univ of Pheonix). I get a large discount (90% off), because I am an employee. The way I look at it is it can only help, can't hurt me in any way. Plus I am taking advantage of education and that is what is important.

Just an FYI, a lot of people look into online education because they think it is cheaper or easier. It is neither, so be prepared. It can be costly.

Re: University of Phoenix

1. I think many people (not all) do think that online courses are easier. But I agree with the PP that they are not easier --they are some of the toughest, yet most rewarding courses I have taken.

2. I've heard some arguments about the fact that in an online degree program the "academic integrity" issue is more in question, because it is more difficult to verify the participant.

3. Some people just think they know the reputation of a traditional school, so therefore it must be better.

Re: University of Phoenix

I am currently enrolled at the University of Phoenix. I am doing the masters in accounting.

I will say first hand that I did a lot of research before finalizing my decision. This school is accreddited so there is no worries.

Online classes are difficult to say the least. You need to be very motivated. I love it for the convience it provides. If you would like any more info FM me.

Re: University of Phoenix

5 years ago or more I would have said yes. I was looking into them at the time.

Now, it' much more accepted. Even "regular" colleges are enrolling in this program because it targets people who cannot go to an actual college (work hours, location, etc...). It's a great thing for colleges. You pay tuition and you don't use space in the college.

As far as being easy. It's not easy at all. It's actually harder. You need a lot of discipline. I had talk to one of the director of the University of Phoenix. Not an actual admission person. She was a "behind the scene" person. She was enrolled there too as a student for a master's degree. She said it was a lot of work, it could be challenging when you had to do assignment with other students and they did not pull their weight. It's all communication with the teacher and other students via online communication so it can be frustrating.

Re: University of Phoenix

Last year we interviewed someone for a job in my office and were cautioned by the VP of HR that UOP doesn't count the same way as going to a "real school".

DH was in HR for 12 years (as a headhunter and in a corporate setting) and doesn't think UOP degrees hold the same weight as other degrees.

I thought of taking online courses through them for my Master's, but was dissuaded from it.

Re: University of Phoenix

I think some might, but you can also get an online degree from a lot of other schools with a good reputation.

I went to Cornell, and I know they now have an eCornell division, where you can claim to have an ivy league degree. I think Stony Brook might also have some.

Re: University of Phoenix

When I was going to UofP and calling jobs, companies and interviewers I was told multiple times that the degree I was earninig didn't carry as much as weight as other degrees from physical universities. Often times I was told that the there is something to getting up and going to class and having that physical connection with teachers and fellow students that wasn't there with UofP and more than a majority of the possible future employers told me they would hire someone who went to physical collection location than an online degree person

eta the UoP I went to BLEW my mind. The first month my grade would be based on a group paper. One man, who had just recently enetered the country and spoke very little english was in my group. We spent 4 of the first 6 hours of the first few group writing meetings sitting and explaining basic english writing structure (as openinig paragraph supporting thoughts, closing etc)FRUSTRATING for the rest of our group to say the least
