I'm going to kill my dog...

She peed on the carpet AGAIN. I am really at my wits end here. We JUST got back from a LONG walk 3 hours ago- and I took her out to pee AGAIN not long ago. This has to be a jealousy thing~ but I have no idea what else to do.....

I'm doing deep breathing exercises to keep from kicking her in the head (because THAT is the only thing I want to do right now)....Chat Icon

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

Animals don't have emotions like jealousy. They can sense change in a household.
how often do you walk her?
have you thought about training?

I'm sorry she is giving you a hard time.

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

We've upped her walks to at least an hour a day. She still peeing. I know since the baby that things are different- and I feel like a bad owner because she's not getting the attention she used to get.Chat Icon

Is she peeing in the same spot?
We have learned to put weewee pads in the one spot that Misty goes when we aren't around and it has made life much easier.Chat Icon

Nope~ she's an equal opportunity pee-er- every spot seems like a good spot to her.

When she does it on the hardwoods, I'm annoyed, but at least it can be easily cleaned. With the carpets, I am at my wits end.

I'm going to have to replace these effing carpets when we move.Chat Icon

Does she try to tell you she needs to go out?
It's a difficult problem, my mother has a chihuahua that has never learned to go outside...he will go out, pee, come in and pee in the house.Chat Icon She gates him on the tile now if she can't keep her eye on him at all times.

Does she try to tell you she needs to go out?
.

SOMETIMES- and thats only if I'm on the main floor of the house. She'll run in the room and when I acknowledge her ("Hey Luna!" or even just look) she'll run out of the room. When that happens, I always take her out- and praise her like crazy.

BUT~ she doesn't always do that.

AND~ she ONLY pees in the house when we are home. She can hold it easily and NEVER pees when she's left home alone.

TY so much for the replies.....Chat Icon

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

Did you talk to the vet about it? My sister adopted a dog at Christmas and she has incontinence - from what we don't know. She takes medication for it. Now that she is in my sister's house though she is taking less and less medication, perhaps because she is more comfortable.

Maybe your pup is upset about the baby and is incontinent for this reason, in which case medication can help - and then she can be weaned...

Good luck!

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

When was the last time she was at the vet? How old is she?

If there are no medical issues, I would consider purchasing a crate. After her walk, put her in the crate, then about 15 minutes later out for a short walk then back in the crate until she is back on track. Good luck.

I doubt it's a jealousy thing. Have you ruled out all medical problems and conditions. Female dogs are prone to having incontinence problems which can usually be remedied with medication. My dog is such a dog.

ITA. My girl dog really had a hard time with holding urine. She is so much better now, but she is capable of reverting back IMO.

Oh - I am right here with you - I swear. Abby goes outside to pee - but if she has to go - she will just squat wherever she is in our house. It makes me so angry.

I already decided I am pulling up the carpet from my stairs that go up to the top landing upstairs - and doing hardwood floors. I am throwing out my area rug under my dining room table (and will get another one when she is fully trained) -- there is only one carpet really in the house that will be a total beetoch to replace bc I have huge furniture on it - so I flip when she goes on there.

It is the most frustrating thing in the world. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I second this. First and foremost get her to the vet to rule out any medical condition. If she doesn't have any medical problems, invest in a crate. My parents used a crate to train my dog, when I was a kid, and it worked great!

My husband and I fully intend to get one when we finally decide on the right dog for us.

There is a lot of information on the internet about crate training in addition, ask your vet about it too.

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

Thank you all so much for your replies!

We just had her annual visit and shots. I mentioned the peeing and the doctor said, "More walks."

I'm leaning that this is more behavioral as she doesn't EVER pee when she is home alone. And DH just mentioned that she doesn't ever pee when it's just him home with Luna. So, the common denominator is me+baby=pee.

I got an FM from Reggie to try to spend more one on one time with Luna. SO- starting today, after work, our evening walk will be sans baby. Maddie will watch Sportcenter with Daddy.

I need to be more attentive to Luna I think. DH is usually the "player" and I just cuddle. BUT~ our cuddletime has been greatly reduced since Maddie came in the picture. I always include Luna in tummy time and playing with Maddie (the baby LOVES her~and she seems to really like the baby), but I suppose that Luna needs to know that Mommy still loves her too.

I never thought that it would really happen- that my love for my dog would change once the baby was born.Chat Icon

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

We had a similar problem with our two pugs. Of course, being my DH is a vet, he checked them out, ordered labs to be sure there was no medical reason for the behavior, and there wasn't.

We met with Jason from Bark Busters, and he said we'd have to retrain them all over again, and it worked!

We kept them in their "snuggle shack" (crate), and only let them out every hour, outside to go to the bathroom...then lots of praise, etc, when they did it...then right back into the crate. We did this for one month, (over time during that month we would slowly give them longer periods of time outside of their crate to roam the house, and worked up to no crate at all).

I know this can be very frustrating. Maybe you could try calling an obedience trainer?

Re: I'm going to kill my dog...

My parents had a dalmation that was very spoiled before they had my brother. When they had my brother, the dog would come in from being outside walk right into the babies room and pee on the crib. Then he would later pee on the rug.

That is great news! At least it's not something physical and can be corrected with minimal effort. I'm glad she's ok!

Don't beat yourself up! Your love may have changed alittle since the birth of your DD but that doesn't mean you love Luna any less.

I think it's hard to find a balance and the road can be rocky until you do. Like I said above, at least it's not a physical problem. This is an easily corrected problem.

ITA...it happens...you have a new baby and its obviously you are going to pay more attention to the baby (and rightfully so) its quite possible that the dog is jealous and is doing it just to get attention.
Are you a SAHM? if so, could you spend babys' nap time playing with the dog? that way the dog is less jealous of time you spend with the baby?
If you keep consitant with it, its easily corrected...it might be difficult to find that balance ( I know when I have a baby...it will be...I have 3 dogs)

Good Luck!!

I know how it is - I feel guilty that I can't give Scout the same attention. Then I think what great friends they will be when DD is a little older!!

How is pup doing??
