Can I clarify something?
Is it true that the big stores like Petco, PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus only handle adoptions for local agencies? They are not "selling" puppies, right?
I have to admit, I found it funny on another site when someone referred to the store as PetDumb--because they do market so many pet items that are either unhealthy or unnecessary and people come into shop and get so excited about all this stuff. But I do shop at PetSmart and I like it better than PetCo.

I'm not really sure but I don't believe that Petco of Petsmart actually does the adoption work. I think they lease out space to agencies.

Re: Can I clarify something?
I know that Last Hope, for cats, adopts there cats out of PetSmart - they do this b/c their cats get seen by more people in a place like PetSmart vs. out of their little office in Huntington. It is just about reaching more people - and it works! My SIL adopted a kitty after seeing him at PetSmart.

Re: Can I clarify something?
You are correct, PETCO and PetsMart allow rescue individuals and organizations to conduct adoptions at their stores. Both organizations are incredible and support rescue organizations with financial grants etc.

Re: Can I clarify something?
That is fantastic! I never knew either store did that...
Yet ANOTHER thing I can add to my list of "what I've learned since starting to post and lurke on the Pets board"!
Very cool.

Exactly - they usually hold adoption clinics with NSAL, Last Hope or Little Shelter. They also generally have cats and kittens in their stores at any given time. These are adoptions and the store itself is not profitting from the adoptions. They also generally request donations for either local shelters or for the ASPCA during the holidays. Either way, they are doing a good thing and I totally support their efforts.

Re: Can I clarify something?
DH & I adopted our dog in April. I found him online at petfinder.com and it just so happened that the shelter was doing an adoption event at a Pet Supplies Plus that weekend so we went down to meet him. The shelter said they do that once a month at various Petcos and Pet Supplies Plus on Long Island. It's a great way to get these dogs out of the shelter and in front of people to see in person and hopefully be saved. We adopted him through the shelter, not through the Pet Supplies Plus store so no, the store was not "selling" the dogs.

Re: Can I clarify something?
The Petco in Union Square has a pretty big section for Kitty Kind, a cat rescue & adoption organization.

Re: Can I clarify something?
Most of the PETCO's and PetsMart allow the animals, usually cats only to remain at the stores and the rescue organization does not have to take them back and forth, which is time consuming and much work. The rescue organization is responsible for the upkeep, cleaning, feeding and there is a volunteer that will be at the store on a daily basis to do so. These locations are called "offsite" which means away from the shelter. Most adopters purchase supplies so it is a win win for everyone. If you go to the PETCO and PetsMart websites you will learn about the programs throughout the year that benefit rescue organizations. I am the director of an organization and we are grant receiptants.
