question for you all.
I am always lurking ove here and see all the posts about puppymills and pet stores. I have no pets and eventually would maybe like a dog. DH has allergies so this may be an issue. But where does one get a dog? Stupid question, but seriously where?? If we would get a dog, I would love an English Bulldog. Any insight would be great for the future. TIA.

Good questions. I have to tell you that if your DH has allergies, English Bulldogs likely won't work out for you.

And where to get them? Through AKC website, you would try to find a local AKC recognized breeder. What is nice is that you get to see the pups, meet their mom, etc, when using a breeder. Also if you took the dog home and DH has an allergic reaction a reputable breeder would take the dog back.
akc breeders
akc recommended breeds for those with allergies
AKC breeder referrel and breed rescue referrels
Keep in mind once you identify the type of dog that would work best for you, you could also possibly adopt a dog of that breed from their breed rescue.
Sounds like you are on the right track by asking these questions! Do a lot of research through AKC.

My friend has 2 Wheaton Terriers and they dont shed at all. I will ask where they got them from.

There are 4 Wheatons in my neighborhood alone. Terriers tend to be stubborn and aggressive at times, so even if they are your best bet allergy wise, learn a lot about them in order to make sure they are right for you.

I know this b/c I wanted one so badly and my DH has bad allergies so we had to pass on them. They shed a lot and any dog that sheds are not good for those with allergies. Some breeds that are better for people with allergies (yet not guaranteed) are Maltese, Poodles, Schnazuers, Bichons, etc.

Great, Thanks Im going to check these sites out now. One more question...Bichons are they yappy doggys? Im not really into yappy dogs. No offense to those that have them but Im more low key and would like a dog with a "chill" quality if that makes sense. Im yappy enough.

I understand what you are saying.
Hmmm I don't know about Bichons. Many terriers are yappy...a few dogs on that list are yappy.....
I don't think Wheatons are too yappy though.

no, my friend's wheaton terriers are NOT yappy at all. They are really good dogs, just get hyper when someone new comes to the house, but I think that is the Terrier in them.

Wheatons are hyper no doubt. There are so many in my neighborhood. They are nice sized dogs, strong and smart (and a bit stubborn).

My parents have a Bichon and she's VERY yappy and hyper! But...their neighbor has a Bichon as well (they could be twins) and he is not at all yappy. So i think it's just the fact that my parents spoiled their dog rotten!

I agree! Any dog is capable of any personality. I have seen all different personalities in the same breed of dogs.

The previous posters gave great resources. In addition to their advice, I would also advise that you can find a brened rescue & use petfinder.com. There are a lot of pure-breds there. No matter where you get your pup from, I would advise you to bring your DH with you to meet the dog to make sure that the allergies are not a problem. There are so many different things on dogs that can trigger allergies. My DH is not allergic to dogs, but when we visit his mother her Husky makes his eyes red & itchy. Our Shiba Inu has the same fur, so we think it is the shampoo & grooming that makes him allergic.
I also agree that a Bulldog or any dog with that type of skin/fur is not ideal for someone with allergies.
Also when you are ready feel free to FM me and I will give you a list of questions to ask any potential breeder, and what to expect as a hopeful adopter.

DH is allergic to dogs so I went through the same process. We have 3 Havanese - they are small - up to 15 pounds, non shedding, and just the best. If you decide to go with a Havanese, please feel free to FM me. I have 3, they are WONDERFUL dogs, and I am a volunteer for Havanese rescue and can help you adopt, if you are interested.
