Anyone ever submit an article to a magazine?
I'm thinking of writing an article about one of my personal experiences - one that I would like to share - did anyone ever have anything published in any of the big magazines? What is the process? thanks

As an editor, I can tell you I delete a lot of emails like that....unless they catch my eye RIGHT off the bat! I don't even work at one of the "big" ones but still....I suggest first making sure you have the proper dept. and proper email address. First, send a query outlining your idea and make the subject title catchy. What magazine might suit your story best? I edit a fitness makeover section...so I love when right away, people have sent me before and after shots so I can see what I need to. I also do a lot of freelance, and I just submitted something to Yoga Journal; I wanted to do a "diary"-type article about doing a teacher training for yoga and balancing it with work/life. I'm pretty sure that entered the recycle bin. Keep plugging! There's also a "Writer's Market" book you can buy to obtain email addresses and names and where to send things. Right now, I have a monthly column in a local magazine, and I only got that b/c someone who writes there recommended me b/c I did some work for HIM...it's a chain!

It's not easy. I'm a Marketing & Communications Director with a Tour Operator. I am also a freelance travel writer. It took me years to establish my contacts and I still get articles I pitch declined (and several of these editors are my friends..lol). I usually get published when an editor I work with hands me an assignment directly.
I'm not saying don't try. You can start by emailing editors directly with a teaser piece to generate some interest.
Good luck!!
ETA: Check out the website mediabistro.com It's a great networking forum and there are also lots of tips there.
