personell/health insurance question
Have you ever heard of bringing a spouse onto your insurance BEFORE the wedding?
I was looking at the form and it says that it can be changed 31 days before to 60 days AFTER the qualifying event.
I went to personell and they have never done it before and they are looking into it but I was wondering if anyone has ever done it?
My FH is a GENIUS and he canceled his health insurance and now I am FREAKING out . . . I am getting married January 12th and that is soon but STILL! And now if they don't let me do it BEFORE i am going to have to go back to work the day after my honeymoon to put him on and REVEAL that i am back and SHOULD be working!!

I've never heard of that. Especially since you need the marriage certificate to prove that you are in fact Married. Maybe putting him on as a domestic partner and then changing it to spouse after the wedding??? Hmmm...I am curious to know what that is about though

Re: personell/health insurance question
They can probably put him on retroactively up to 31 days before the wedding. But I doubt they'll add him without proof of the qualifying event (i.e. marriage certificate). My DHs insurance company told us to keep receipts if I needed to go to the doc or get prescriptions before I was actually on and they would reimburse us as long as it was after the effective date.
Congrats by the way!

If you live together, you can do it as domestic partners. There are forms you have to fill out and I think maybe sign an affidavit stating you're at the same address. I forget all the details, but I started using DH's insurance before we got married.

I have heard about something like that but you have to be living together for like five years or so.

That is a great idea - I will definitely hold on to anything like that ( hopefully there won't be anything though! )
Thanks everyone for your responses, we don't live together so we can't be considered domestic partners.
I figured you would need the marriage certificate too. . .

Re: personell/health insurance question
does your insurance cover a domestic partner? I added my DH 6 years before he was my DH- the requirement was that i show a lease proving that he lived w/ me for at least 1 year prior to adding him, which isn't hard to do.

Re: personell/health insurance question
My DH's job told us to send the paperwork in as soon as we got the marriage license. Turned out they added me to his insurance as of the date we got out license (almost 30 days before we got married). We didnt find this out until we came home from our HM & I got my ins card in the mail & I called to find out the effective date.

Re: personell/health insurance question
my company added him on our wedding day

we had the cards when we came back from our HM

Re: personell/health insurance question
I am fairly certain that DH's company covered me as of the first of the month in which we were married.

Re: personell/health insurance question
My brother was able to do this as soon as they had the marriage cert (which was a month or more before the wedding).

Not good! That means he has a lapse in coverage if he is not covered this month. So god forbid he should come up with an illness, it would fall under a preexisting condition clause. Had he stayed covered and switched over, you cannot be hit with a preexisting illness clause.
As of when is it no longer effective? If you already got your marriage cert, he should be able to be added on.

I believe if the lapse is under 60 days he will not be exposed to pre-existing. He can reinstate his coverage. Tell him to call his health insurance provider. Start there. Let us know what happens.

Re: personell/health insurance question
It depends on the policy, some companies buy a rider allowing for insuring a domestic partner.
I was on DHs policy as a Domestic Partner before we got married, the only catch was we had to pay tax on the portion his company contributed to my insurance because the Gov't does not recognize domestic partnership.

I never had to provide a copy of my marriage license when I added my husband to my insurance.
