Spinoff to Racheee's post - if you're Jewish
and someone wishes you a merry Christmas, do you get offended.
before you answer, let me just add something to the equation.... we go to see DH's family for Christmas and they all know I am Jewish, obviously. yet some still wish me a merry Christmas
I am not offended by it, but I do find it very strange

Re: Spinoff to Racheee's post - if you're Jewish
I'm not offended, I think its become the seasons greeting type of thing. People are constantly asking me what I am doing for Christmas this year, even people in shops...whatever, so I always say, You know what, I don't celebrate Christmas so I am going to stay at home and relax.

No, I'm not offended, but I do have to admit that by the end of the holiday season, particularly in years when Christmas and hanukah overlap, it does start to grate on my nerves.
On the other hand, I'm SO touched when someone goes out of their way to give me a hanukah card or wish me a happy hanukah, or happy holidays

if a stranger says it to me, I always respond with "thanks, same to you". but this is DH's family. last year I wanted to respond with "thanks, Happy Hanukkah"

No I don't get offended. I realize its someone just wishing a holiday greeting and its coming from a good place.
But after a while, it does remind me that this is a Christian nation where people assume you are a Christian.

Re: Spinoff to Racheee's post - if you're Jewish
for this reason i dont say Merry Christmas unless im 100% sure they celebrate it. i usually say happy holidays and make sure that the cards i buy say "Seasons greetings" or "happy holidays" so as not to offend anyone.

i have done this before i am not the kind of person who keeps their mouth shut and this was the nicest way i could think of to get my point across!!
i wouldn't say i get offended - annoyed, yes, but offended seems too strong a word for me.

Re: Spinoff to Racheee's post - if you're Jewish
if I KNOW someone doesn't celebrate christmas, i'll wish them "happy [insert holiday] or just happy holidays
if i don't know what they celebrate, i say happy holidays
wouldn't offend me though if someone wished me merry christmas and i didn't celebrate

I agree. I do believe there is a general feeling that even though you are not Christian, you will somehow celebrate Christmas. I get it too from people I know. I'm not really offended but clearly your inlaws know you don't celebrate Christmas but I guess they feel if they are saying it to everyone at the house, they have to say something to you and this year Chanukah is early.
Ok, babbling over.

Ok, babbling over. it's never my MIL, just a few of DH's uncles, cousins.
either way, I think it's a little obnoxious to say that to someone who you know is Jewish. DH doesn't understand why it bothers me. I never say anything to them, but I do to him.

FH is Jewish. He doesn't mind at all.
His whole thing is - why be mad when someone only means well?
Sometimes I think you have to pick your battles. He thinks it's just not worth getting upset over. Even though I'm not Jewish, I totally agree.
