Re: "What would Jesus buy?"

that sounds like an amusing film....

But historically, christmas celebrations were always about secular festivities, and was almost never a holiday focused upon the birth of jesus. Prior to the expansion of chirstianity (roman era), christmas was a minor holiday (easter was the big one).... christmas was emphasized and made a more central holiday as more and more pagans converted to christianity. This was because chrisitanity embraced the encorporation of local entrenched customs during the winter solstice festivals... which in turn made converting to christianity not difficult for the pagans, since their favorite holiday activities didn't completely disappear... their meaning, and what they were celebrating just changed Chat Icon these traditions included giant winter feasts, of course...

In medieval days-the 19th century, there was a mardi gras feel to christmas... drunken debauchery and parties in the street. The fundamentalists (such as the pilgrims) destested this devilsh party so much that they outlawed christmas and forced everyone to work that day.

In the 19th century, Christmas was gentrified by replacing the drunken party tradition with family-centered traditions, and gift-giving. Hence the start of commercialism in christmas.

In the interim, devout individuals have constantly complained that Christmas is being secularized... and have fought for millennia to 're-claim' the day as a day of reverence and prayer.... it has never worked, likely becuase of the intensely deep-rooted secular traditions that everyone loves. But I give them credit for never giving up trying!

so, in summary, if it weren't for a consumer-crazy christmas, we might be still running around in the street drunk every 12/25..... so walmart and cocacola did not take over a pious holiday... they took over a semi-secular festival day
