That is a rough situation. However, try to think of yourself and your baby first. This is one of the few times you can! Your boss will find a way to make it work, but that shouldn't come at your expense! Chat Icon

Ditto. So what is at risk here? ANY maternity leave, or an extended? I think this woman who works from hom should come in more- she owes you that. See what she is willing to do and take it from there maybe?
I wish we weren't due at the same time- I would offer ot come work for you.

Thanks - the problem is I was semi-calm about taking my leave b/c I figured she owed me that much, to help out during my leave since I've basically done what I can to make it possible for her to be home for 2 yrs. Now she won't be able to help one bit since she's due a week before me!

ETS: I get 3 months. That alone nearly gave my boss a heart attack to hear. He was very stressed over how we'd deal for that time. My plan was to take my 3 months and then spread out vacation time for July/August so I could work 3 days a week and then start the baby in full-time daycare in September. My mom is a teacher and can help me in the summer. Now I don't know if that will even be an option if there is no one experienced here to cover for me.

Well, I wouldn't be so quick to give up your plans. I think your boss' only alterntaive is hire an additional person. You're still 4 months away, which should be enough time to train someone to cover for you (and/or your c-worker) during your maternity leave and into the summer. I hope it works out! Chat Icon

I'm with Chica, don't give up your plans so easily. Obviously you're a very loyal worker, but your child has to come first and it's up to your boss to do what needs to be done to make your absence less painful for him. I hope it works out for you.

I am so sorry you're going through this. To be honest thought...you can't wory about it. It's your bosses problem. That's why you work for him and not yourself. He needs to make sure that his a** is covered not you! He should have dealt with this when your coworker went on maternity the first time. If you get three months, you get three months...whether he likes it or not. You gave him plenty of warning! And to be honest, I don't think that it's fair that the other lady gets to work from home and you don't...and she is giving him much less notice than you! 4 months is plenty of time to train someone!!! I agree, he should be hoping you are definitely coming back or he will be in even more trouble!

So sorry about this...such un-needed stress but I can totally see why you are worrying about it. The only thing you can is wait it out...a lot of times these things have a way of working themselves out. Hang in there!!-

Re: I know I shouldn't be this upset, but I'm screwed...

Thanks for your support all. I thought I had my bases covered. I have 3 staffers I planned to split my duties among but not one of them has been here for much more than 6 months - so no matter what, I needed a seasoned person to semi-cover the management end of my job. He will never agree to hire an outside temporarily - there's too much confidential material floating around.
My DH just called and could tell I was ready to breakdown. He nearly Sh!t when he heard this b/c he knows how much I've done to help the other woman out. Granted, obviously I don't blame her - just REALLY sucky timing.

ETS: I know it's not my responsbility to worry about this but everything has become my job over the years. I've been here for 8 years and am the longest full-time employee here now other than the Chairman himself. Everyone else has left or gotten away with part-time. I had hoped to do what I could to make this a smooth leave so he might consider letting me have some flexibility. Guess that's not happening Chat Icon

do not change your plans! It's a good thing you told your boss before she did. Can you imagine how he is going to react to her news?

soo sorry you are stressing about this. Your boss will have to figure this out with you - it shouldn't be all on you. It sounds like you've been a very loyal and dependable employee and he will hopefully remember that when you ask for the flexibility you need.

Nah, I purposely hired an unwed, unattached young gal for that position hoping I'd get a few years out of her before she wanted maternity leave Chat Icon

Re: I know I shouldn't be this upset, but I'm screwed...

I know its hard and I had issues when going out from my job, the person they hired to replace me backed out two days before I went out and they were screwed. Basically begging me to stay a few more days. I just said no, besides DH killing me if I had stayed, I was physically too exhauseted to work anymore. You have to take care of yourself and baby. It is your bosses job to worry and stress over the company, not yours. Your health is the most important thing right now. Don't let the boss get to you, he will find someone and everything will work out and you will have stressed for nothing in the end. Chat Icon

Re: I know I shouldn't be this upset, but I'm screwed...

I'd really try not to worry about it too much, and I also would not change plans due to this latest development. It sounds as if the other woman you work with has had a cushy arrangement for awhile now, and yes, the timing is bad, but just because she's having another baby doesn't mean you should change your plans. Doesn't sound like she's changing hers!

It's ultimately your boss' problem. If you are really short-staffed, he should have dealt with this earlier instead of trying to make you feel guilty for having a baby yourself.

If so many people don't stick around or have flex-time arrangements, then you have every right to expect similar treatment. You have shown loyalty and if your boss has any sense, he will kiss your behind now in the hopes that you will come back when the 3 months is over.

JMO, but I get mad when bosses lean on the good workers and expect more from them than others.
