Speaking of Veteran's Day
We were talking this weekend, and both DH and I are working today, but have off Martin Luther King Day. Does anyone see something wrong with that??? I know, I know, I'm not trying to start drama, but I feel we should get both off. My DH is a Vet, and it pisses him off!

the government is closed both days. it is at a company's discretion whether to close their offices on both days.

Right, I understand that, but that's not what I was saying.
Its annoying how a Company chooses one over the other.

I had off Election day but worked today. If it wasn't for Veterans, voting wouldn't be the way it is today. I think it is backwards.

here's the thing though
they give all these days off - what's the point?
By doing that, people forget WHY they're off and just look at it as another day off.
I'm all for acknowledging certain people and events, but we've gotten to the point where it's more about the day off and sales at the mall and less about what it was intended for.
I'd love to ask an average 6th grade class who MLK is? Or why we celebrate veterans?

I have never had off for Veteran's Day.
I always had MLK day off (since it was declared a nat'l holiday).

My students know - I teach them. I made sure they knew the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. They also know who MLK is. This is not an easy task as my students have severe learning disabilities, but I keep it simple for them.

The company I used to work for did the same thing. Closed on MLK and open on Veteran's Day.
We didn't get President's Day or Columbus Day either (we had In Service Trainings).
