Re: does anyone work for the state?
There are a few of us on here who work for the State. I'm one of them.
The health benefits are very reasoanable and cover a great deal. Cost depends on individual or family plans.
The retirement is dependent on you - whethere you want a private fund, or investment into the NYS Retirement System.

Yup. I think most state workers I know have the Empire Plan for health. It's good, and covers a lot...It's up to an $18 copay, but not bad. Lots of time off, etc.

Re: does anyone work for the state?
i work for nassau county but my position is regulated by the state so the benefits are pertty much the same. the benefits are very good, full health insurance, also free for spouses and children, which covers dental and some optical. 403b plan (like a 401k), and FMLA (no paid maternity leave).
FM for more questions - hope this helped some!

i just have to say i have this plan and it's GREAT! co-pays aside, my brand name prescriptions are sooo cheap! and i get 1/2 day of sick leave and 1/2 day of vacation leave each pay period, but i'm not sure if that's a county rule or state.

you can take civil service exams and be canvassed for county, town and state positions.
you can review state positions at the various state colleges/university web sites and their associated medical centers.

the time acrual for sick and vacation varies with the type of job (county, town, state). I work directly for the state, and I earn 1.5 days of sick AND vacation a month.
My husband works for the Town and his time acrual is completely different from mine - it's based on the hours he worked per time period.

That sounds better than the state--I do pay to have my spouse on my health plan (and would pay more for a family plan for kids). i get optical and dental through my union, but i do pay union dues.

Yup, also how long you've been there. I'm maxed out now at 1.75 vacation a month and 1.75 sick a month. I think they start at 1.25 each per month.
