When to start researching day care?
When should I start? I am 26 weeks today and will need day care starting in April/May 2008.

Re: When to start researching day care?
I will probably need daycare in May and have just started to look. Most places that Ive called and spoken too, suggetsed to come by and check things out. They will take my name for a wait list but arent sure if anything will open up in May until Jan/Feb.

Re: When to start researching day care?
I actually started this past summer. I am due in January but don't need it until Sept '08. A lot of places have waiting lists so I wanted to get started early. I actually put a deposit down in august. I would get started as soon as possible. Good Luck!

I just called Teacher's Pet in Wantagh and they said, as of now, there are no spots open for September 08 Guess I need to start researching more.

Re: When to start researching day care?
START NOW. I went to go look at places last Friday and 2 places told me they had no availability and couldn't be sure they'd have anything in April when I will need something.

Re: When to start researching day care?
I would look asap. When I found out I was pg at 8 weeks or so, I put my name on a wait list that I am still on, and I'm 37 weeks now. Just recently I put myself on another wait list, and also signed the baby up for a center that did not have a wait list. So I think you can't do it too early.
HOWEVER...the timing could still be off. If, for example, you need daycare for May, and they have an opening in April, they won't save the spot for you even if your name has been on the list for a long time. They'll call you and ask you if you want to pay for April so you can have the spot in May, kwim? Or they will just go to the April families. This is the experience I have had with 2 centers, maybe it's not like that everywhere.

Re: When to start researching day care?
Since I knew that I was going back to work and needed daycare (in other words had no flexibility) I started looking in January. I was due at the end of May and needed to put him in August/September.
Surprisingly, none of the places we went to had a waiting list at the time although shortly after I heard that the one we chose did have a waiting list. It never hurts to do it early and I loved having one less thing to worry about.
Also...we had to put down a deposit to secure a spot (50%).

I am going to start as soon as we get settled from the move. We are not sure if we will need it or not, but I want to have one on hand incase.
