Being a phony friend

Can you ever do this? Being a part of a group that is friends and just be "fake" to one you just don't get along with. When the group gets together, you are warm and loving but one on one, you ignore the person. Or sometimes not have the best to say about this person not knowing that they are aware that you make comments about them behind their backs to one or more of the other people in the group.

No, I honestly could not. I'm pretty much out there with my feelings and if I have a true dislike for someone, it totally reveals itself on my face, in my tone and actions towards them. Not to say I haven't swallowed it and been PC or polite towards them in group situations. I just don't play it up like I care for them more than I outwardly appear.

I couldnt be a phony friend, but i could be peaceful for the sake of the group. I'll make generic conversation (if i have to), but i'm not going to act all BFF with them.

IA.. just bc I am not friends with them I am not going to make the group feel uncomfortable. I have this problem right now and I think its very selfish of my friend for not being able to be mature and come out with the group anymore.

I agree, it is hard for me to hide my feelings for someone and I would never act really friendly with someone if I really couldn't stand them, but I will keep my mouth shut for the sake of the group.

Some of my friends are friends with people that I do not like. When we are all together I am civilized. I never talk about how I don't like them to anyone but my husband or maybe sister.

But I would never go out of my way to hang out with these people or be phony and make them think that I really like them.

Same here.

Re: Being a phony friend

I cannot be a phony friend. If I am your friend, I am there for your always. But I have friends in a group that maybe some of their friends don't thrill me...I am nice to them, I am polite, but that doesn't mean we chit-chat on the phone, email and have dinner dates with the DH's. KWIM?

Re: Being a phony friend

couldn't do it. could i be polite and civil in a group? sure. but people can read my emotions all over my facial expressions and tones; if i don't like someone it is usually known.

I do find it hard to be friendly to people who are friends with people I don't like, particularly because often times my dislike is based on something that goes to character.

I do have a hard time keeping my mouth shut about people I don't like. The others would be aware that I'm not a fan of the person. I would be polite but would not seek the person out. If I don't like someone they already know so there would be nothing to discuss.

Actually I am being asked to be the phony friend and I am having trouble with this.... I wear my heart on my sleeve and just cannot be that phony when it is someone I truly do not like.

You? Wear your heart on your sleeve? Never Chat Icon

Have you told him/her that you're finding it impossible? I think there are times when you have to be civil, but you can't be expected to be friendly...

I will and have faked it for the sake of the group. I think it is more mature to "fake it" then act like your in HS and give the cold shoulder. There is only one person that I will give the cold shoulder to, and she bad mouthed DH and I to mutual friends.Chat Icon

I have in the past but I learned that it is not the way to go and that it didn't benefit me in the least. Now I am pretty open about my feelings (but try to soft and not brutal about it)

If it's a friend of a friend, I am always polite and cordial - Who am I to make everyone uncomfortable? - but I am not OVERLY friendly .........
