Re: how much is too much?
I don't think 2 is too much if you have family in different places. MY MIL threw us a pre-wedding reception (started out as a co-ed shower) in Chicago for the people who couldn't make it to NY. And my mom and BM threw one for me in NY.
My GF had 4 showers, which I thought was ridiculous. Thank God I only went to one. They were hosted by - BM, her mother, MIL and DH's grandmother. I think she also had one at work.

All of my OOT relatives just send a gift, as far a feuding families, what happens at the wedding?
I have probably one of the biggest families, but I only invited 1st cousins and aunts.
I don't know...I am just listing reasons I have heard from other people/sites.
For some families, every single woman on the guest list is invited to the shower.
I remember where one person I knew through a different wedding site had a shower thrown by her church members...she was very active in her church but she couldn't invite them all to her wedding so they made one for her. Plus her mother made one for her.
Maybe the bride lives in a one state and has one hosted by local friends but the mother throws one in her home state?
Just because it's different then what we are accustomed to doesn't necessarily make it wrong. And just because you are invited doesn't mean you have to attend.

Re: how much is too much?
I did not want 2 showers. I had one and it was pretty big because it was co-ed and that was more than enough especially since I also had an e-party. Then since I got pg right away, I felt terrible about having yet another shower!!! But my baby shower was small and intimate so that was fine with me.
I can understand having 2 showers if it's one for the family and then your co-workers decide to throw you a mini shower. If you are inviting the same people to more than 1 shower, then I think it's too much.

Re: how much is too much?
I wouldnt like to have 2 showers unless there was a parent that lived out of state. I LOVED my shower - it was seriously one of the best days. My mom and sister invited 35 people, half of which is my step family (I am close with them). If I didnt know you, you werent invited. FHs friends were not invited unless I was friends with them as well. MIL came in from Florida.
Then my coworkers threw me a small one in the lunch room which was nice.

My mom didn't invite everyone on my wedding list to the shower I wanted a more intimate shower so only close friends and family attended
That's what my Mom and Sister did. It was so much nicer for everyone.
