Tip the plumber?
We have a plumber here that's been hooking up our oil tanks to our burner.
He's been here since 11am and it's now 4:30pm.
Should I tip him? If so, how much?

Re: Tip the plumber?
I would tip him maybe $20-30. How much is the whole job costing?

Re: Tip the plumber?
the thing is, he's been here a really long time and my DH doesn't think the job should have taken this long.
My DH doesn't want me to tip (he thinks we're going to get mauled when we receive the bill b/c the guy was here for so many hours.)

you should call the company and ask them how long it should take. Maybe there's a problem with the install.

I wouldn't. It's his job.
I would, though, offer him food and drink if he was here throughout the day.

Re: Tip the plumber?
I just asked my DH (who is a plumber) how long is should take. He said normally it's a days worth of work. So according to him the time frame is accurate. He said the tip is not necessary. Hope this helped

I have no clue, but my husband is fearing the worst considering the number of hours the guy has been here.

LOL, you sound like my DH!!!

I gave him his choice of beverages everytime he came upstairs. I didn't really have much along the lines of food to offer him.

Re: Tip the plumber?
I would definitely tip him. Yes, it is his job but I tip everyone who services my home. You spent so much already, what is another $20-$30? If they will service your burner in the future, it may be worth the tip.

Re: Tip the plumber?
So, did you tip? Knowing me, I would have. Probably thrown him a $20. That's what I did when we had our tankless water heater installed. They told us it would take maybe 3 hours, they were here for almost 7! Just more complicated with the gas hook-ups and exhaust holes they had to drill through the house to the outside.

No and I'm glad I didn't tip!
The plumbers were here last Friday when they started this job (the guy that came yesterday was one of the guys from last Friday.)
Both my DH and I were traveling this past weekend, me in MI and he in OH. I get a call from DH late Friday night that he came home to garbage in dumpster courtesy of our plumbers. It wouldn't have been a big deal, but the dumpster is only for natural materials: roots, mulch, shrubs, etc.. It was quite obvious that there wasn't any "garbage" in there. So my DH had to climb into the dumpster and pick out all their garbage.
Then he walks up to the house and sees about a dozen cigarette butts in front of our garage. Yuck!!!!
And to top it off, my DH goes down to the basement and smells something funny...something burning. Come to find out, they left a plastic box on top of something and it was melting/had melted. (I can't recall what they left it on that gets hot.)
DH decided not to make waves and wasn't going to say anything. We just wanted the job finished and we would never use these guys again, nor would we recommend them to anyone.
They were supposed to come Tuesday to complete the job. I wait around, my DH calls me at 3:30pm and asks if they had shown yet. I tell him no and nobody has called (I don't have their number to call them b/c DH has been dealing with them.) DH calls them, they state they're running late and will be at our home first thing Wed. morning...at 8:30am. So I wait. 9:30am and still no plumbers. I call DH and give him the heads up. He calls them and they say they'll be there shortly. At 10:00am I see the truck across the street and the guy is on his cell phone. So I wait thinking he'll be knocking on the door any minute. 10:15, 10:30, finally at 10:45am they ring the doorbell.
The guy does his work and occasionally steps outside for materials (and cell phone breaks)...I know he's smoking outside b/c he constantly has a cigarette behind his ear and he reeks like cigarettes/smoke (I actually had to light a Yankee Candle in the kitchen b/c he smelled so bad. ) I never actually saw him smoking though, so I couldn't see if or where he was tossing his butts.
DH comes home from work. DD and I go outside to greet him and I hear DH yell "those azzholes did it again!" The plumber dumped all his garbage in our dumpster again!!!!! Pipe parts, soda cans, you name it! It couldn't be anymore obvious that the materials in the dumpster aren't "garbage".
We get up to the garage and then I see his cigarette butts!!!!
Needless to say, DH is giving them a call today for an azz reaming.
For those who are interested, that was my experience with Aiello Brothers of Northport/Southampton.

Re: Tip the plumber?
That's insane! What did he think when he was throwing more stuff in the dumpster, the other junk had disappeared and in that short time you had cleared the same amount of brush?
And thank god you found that thing that was melting, could you imagine?

Re: Tip the plumber?
Normally I tip (we tip the Petro guys b/c they're real good to us.)
I think DH was deadset against me tippping b/c of our experience with them last Friday and the fact that they either never show or are late and never call to let us know.

Uggh, what an experience. I guess tipping wasn't warranted!
