Replacing Molding?
Has anyone replaced molding in their homes? Was it very difficult? It doesn't sound as if it would be, but as with many things, I'm guessing there may be more behind it than you would think.
We recently had old carpet removed and the wood floors refinished in our bedrooms, and the bottom portion of the moldings near the floors looks awful. Lots of the paint is chipped, and in some places, the wood has rotted. Given the condition of the old moldings, I'm guessing we should replace them, rather than try to patch and repaint.
Also, if we were to hire someone to do this, who would you call? It sounds like a small job for a contractor.

definitely a reasonable DIY. you likely will have to rent a saw capable of miter cuts for the corners if you don't already have one.... but otherwise, just carefully pry off the old mouldings (avoid damaging your walls!), measure and cut your new mouldings with mitered edges, and nail with finishing nails.......

Very simple. We replaced molding in our office and hallway and kitchen. It was very easy.

If they are painted, put some white paintable caulk where the pieces meet. Either corners, or long walls if you need more than 1 piece. It fills in any gap you have from imperfect cuts, and it flexes with the temperature so it won't crack when it gets hot. Once you paint over it, you won't even notice where the caulk is.

We are doing moulding right now. If you want crown, it can be tricky to miter (my DH is determined  ) but they also sell products that make doing the corners easier, pieces that are already mitered so you just have to cut straight pieces. There are lots of products to make the whole thing easier - from the casings around the windows to the baseboards too. I was just at Home Depot for 3 hours trying to coordinate 3 rooms of moulding.
I think it's totally a DIY job as long as you follow the "measure once, cut twice" rule. Of course a contractor can do it super fast but if you don't want to hire someone, I think it's totally doable.

professionals will also miter the places the 2 moldings meet in the middle of the wall - and then of course fill in those lines. It gives those places a more finished look.

ITA - except I believe the rule is "measure twice, cut once".
DH & my dad did our study...and then DH did our guest room by himself. Was super easy when following the "measure twice, cut once" rule.
