Fish?
So DH and I had won some goldfish at a Carnival a week ago. All 7 have unfortunately kicked the bucket.
DH was bummed so I am going to get a real fish tank (with a filter and all) and get him some new cool fun fish. I heard maintaining a saltwater tank is difficult so I'm going to go with a Freshwater tank.
Can anyone recommend some really cool/pretty/easy to take care of Freshwater fish for my new aquarium?
Also any advice on maintaining the tank and such is appreciated.

Re: Fish?
And catfish are good for the tank, right? They eat all the crap? Or something like that I think. Maybe while I'm at Petsmart I'll get fish for dummies or something.

Angel fish are really cool, so are Beta. Just don't put more than one Beta fish in your tank or they'll attack each other.

Angel fish are pretty aggressive too. And yes catfish are good for the tank eating crap and such.
This is true...
DH had a fresh water tank with 2 angel fish and two "convict" fish. (I'm not sure if that's their real name, it's what he called them.)
Anyway, the "convicts" were supposed to be the more aggressive fish but in the end, it was the angel fish who were the agressors and ate them.

Re: Fish?
I have had my little Betta fish in a small bowl for almost two years. I clean the water once a week and feed it every day. How it isn't dead, I dont know.

Re: Fish?
you should go to a pet store and look for ones you like, then ask the people there if this one and that one can be mixed. Decide if you want a community tank or an agressive tank and whether or not you want to get a heater. Our tank is a freshwater heated semi-aggressive...we have mostly barbs and you can get some pretty ones. They are also very easy to care for but the do need a heater.
We have tiger barbs, tin foil barbs, cherry barbs, odessa barbs...etc etc! There are many kinds and DH loves them!! I had a few convicts in there as well and they were breeding like crazy...we probably raised over 200 convicts and gave them all away to pet stores. That was fun but got annoying pulling them all out all the time so we got rid of them all.

Re: Fish?
Go to the pet store and ask what fish can go together.
Cichlids can be pretty nasty, angel fish are the tame ones of the cichlid bunch. To the above poster who had nasty angel fish- perhaps they were mating??
Neons and angel fish don't mix, and don't mix your Anabantidae (Gouramis and Betta fish) fish. They are too closely related. Barbs can be nasty.
Tetras are good starting fish and so are swordfish and platys.
Please keep in mind the size of your tank and how many fish you can keep in there and how big they will get.
Also it is very important to start up your tank and cycle it. They won't tell you all this in the pet store, b/c they want to sell you fish. But if you don't do this you fish will die within 2-3 weeks. It is also known as new tank syndrome.
Maybe this will help you out:

Thanks for the info! PetSmart was actually really helpful and told me after I have the tank set up to come back with a water sample and they will test it for me.
