Just an observation -
When people post threads asking recommendations on "good" towns to live in - I think that it is fine if people post their positives. But if you are going to post something negative about a town, then you should put that in and FM and send it to that person privately. You may be saying something bad about a town that people who read this board live in, and are potentially offending many people.

I like reading the pros and cons of particular areas. And I don't get offended if I hear anything negative about the town I live in or the towns near by. Its good to hear different perspectives whether you agree with them or not.

Me too. I'd rather get people's opinions that aren't sugar coated. There are good and bad parts to all areas, so people should take it to heart if something derogatory about their town comes up. A lot of times, its people giving their "impressions" of a town, not the people who live there and really know it.

Well, thats exactly the point. And then it has the potential to start drama.
I'm not saying anything should be sugar coated. And if you live an a particular area and know its a nice place to live why would you want to see someone write something negative and possibly untrue?

I have to agree with Lauren. I don't even mind if people post pros and cons about places they have lived in, but a lot of times it's just hearsay and they don't really know anything about the town...just what they've heard.
If you live in a town or have lived - post pros and cons...if you haven't lived there, you really don't know what it's like.

I like the pro and con and if someone says something about the town where I live and I think it is untrue, I rebut the statement with my opinion........

Re: Just an observation -
My town has pros and cons...I ain't afraid to hear them...I moved here based on my own thoughts and feelings and also from some great feedback both here and friends.
For instance, one huge drawback to MY town in East Rockaway is the very, very small HS, not that fabulous to me. Not a great pro, but I love the town enoughto confront that con and decided to deal with it down the road.
I loved also living in Long Beach, but I would be the first to tell you that the parking is horrendous, you can touch your neighbor on the west end, and the schools aren't stellar...will we eventually try to buy in LB when my commute isn't as huge an issue and our kids are bigger, in a heartbeat.

Same. Hearing cons from people who live there is useful, but from people who have not, not always.
No town is perfect, and there is always going to be something wrong no matter where you live.

I don't mind hearing them. I know when we were looking and I posted a certain area, I got a lot of pos/neg which helped us decided not to look there.

I actually like to hear the cons. Most people will only give the pros. It's good to hear the "not so good" stuff too.

I dont mind when people post cons about my town really. If I dont agree I will say something otherwise I just let it go and realize that everyone has their own opinion and perceptions...
I don't mind either. What I don't like is when people make a comment about a town they grew up in or used to live in 20 years ago and make a comment based on their experience well...20 years ago. A lot of of towns have changed on LI on both directions (good or bad).
So, while I like the cons, I like the cons to be based on "current" information.

Re: Just an observation -
Just some more of my own thoughts based on comments written
Yes EVERY town has pros and cons. And if someone says I am thinking of buying a house in X town. If you live there can you tell me some things about it? I don't mind if people then state pros and cons. What I am talking about is when people ask for "good" and "bad" areas. What this usually leads to is people naming areas they "think" are good and areas they "think" are bad even if they have never set foot in those towns. So what I was really trying to say in my original post was that if you think an area is "bad" and really have no evidence to back up your claim, then don't put it in your post. All you are dong is offending people who live there.

Re: Just an observation -
I am not offended but I do live in proximity to one of the areas mentioned. We bought our house as a starter house. We knew we had at least 7 yrs before we would have to worry about schools. We have now been here for almost 5 yrs and I am still not pregnant. I live in islandia(CI school district), I have a 4BD expanded ranch on a 1/3 of an acre. My neighbors are nice, take care of their properties and mind their own business for the most part(which we like) we have no issues with securityu, theft, vandalism, etc. The best thing? I paid 287k for my house and it is worth about 370-400K(through comps in the area) We're happy.
I think that should be one of your concerns: will you stay in this house forever?

Re: Just an observation -
A lot of times people don't really know anything about the town... they heard from a friend of a friends second cousin or something like that I am not against people posting negative opinions, as long as there is some fact behind it. I often find that is not the case when it comes to certain areas I am very familar with.
