I was told by a plumber a long time ago to think of what the temp needs to be in order to freeze water... 60 degress is not cold enough to freeze anything...he also said as long as there is water running through the pipe occasionally that it is fine. You dont want to keep it really cold and never use any water that is when it starts to freeze, moving water takes longer to freeze...
My thermostat is on a timer it is like 65 in the morning when we get up and then i drop it til about 60 during the day since no one is home and then at like 5-6 it goes to about 68 when we get home from work til we go to bed and then it is like 60 again at night every once in a while we adjust it if it is too cold. And at night we dont like it hot b/c it gets too stuffy iwth the comforter and all.

To answer the original poster... we do this every year! Its a mini contest in our house to see how long we can go without turning on the heat. Usually I say no earlier than Oct 1st, with oil prices now, I'm bumping that to Nov 1st!
I'm going to layer my son up during the day, and keep the thermostat to around 68 (though in our old house 68 is def much colder than 68!) At night though I don't feel his fleece feety pj's are warm and he's too big for the sleep sacks now. Not too sure what to do since the temp us usually 62-65 at night.
RE: freezing pipes
It has a lot to do with location and the temp outside too. We had a pipe freeze but not break last year - heat was on prolly 65 degrees overnight BUT it was the coldest day of the year like wind chills below 0 and the pipe was ground level on an outside wall andnot insulated. It had never frozen before but all these variable contributed to it. We realized when the water wouldn't come through the faucet and DH warmed it up with my hair dryer, then insulated it and wrapped it with heat tape so that it won't happen again.
This happened to BIL last year too and it did bust, he lived in the house 10 years never a problem, one freezing day and an uninsulated pipe near an outside wall froze even with the heat on.
On the other hand my parents house way upstate is fairly new and well insulated, they leave the heat at 50 when they are not there which is often, no problems.

We are in!! I like the house FREEZING!!! If it were up to me I wouldn't put the heat on ever!!! Just cooking with oven makes the house SO hot I have to open the windows!

Ok we're out! so much for November 1st! Drats!
It wasn't even my suggestion, DH thought maybe our son was cold in the AM so he programmed it to only come on 5am-7am at 68 degrees still not bad! LOL
