Friendly Contest? Still in?
Remember "The master of your domain" contest on Seinfeld...who could go the longest without...
Given the price of home heating this year anyone want to see who can go the longest without turning on the heat? "Master of frozen domain"
ETA: Who's still in? I am.

Re: Friendly Contest?
That's funny!! I think I could win that. When I still lived with my parents, and they would go to Florida for the winter, I had to pay the utilities. Heat is expensive!! So I would leave the thermostat at about 65 degrees.

HA! I was lucky if DH set the thermostat for 67 for like three hours in the early evening ... the rest of the time it was on 63 (I always thought my dogs would freeze while we were at work ) ... I cannot imagine what he'll have it set for this winter with oil prices what they are

Re: Friendly Contest?
Our thermostat is set for 62 during the day during heating season... Its been like that for two years now, dating back to when we both worked during the day and weren't home (to save on heating bills).
Well, I was home last winter and never reprogrammed the thermostat and will be home again this winter (I am a SAHM). 62 can be mighty chilly

Trish: What did you dress Andrew in last winter while you were in the house? I don't mind being a little chilly, but I don't want Sarah to get sick. I stocked up on long sleeve t shirts and unlined sweatpants for her and have a few sweaters, also some of those terry and fleece sleepers. Do you think that will be good?
Our house is a little drafty, but we had the outside seals redone on all the windows this summer, new storm doors installed this week and I have blinds on all the windows that I can leave closed to try to keep some of the chill out.
TIA! Cathy

Re: Friendly Contest?
I will be ripping both thermostats off the wall. There won't be any such thing as heat this winter for us.
I actually prefer a cold apartment anyways.

Andrew always had on sweats and a long sleeve t-shirt. I'm the type of person who would rather be cool that too warm. I did bump up the heat on a few occassions to 68, but never higher. He had a cold once, and that was from seeing my germy nephew over Christmas! So being on the cold side did not make Andrew more susceptible to getting sick, KWIM?
At night, Andrew slept in fleece footed PJs with a fleece sleepsack on.
This time I am reprogramming the thermostat! 68 during the day and we leave it at 62 for the night!

Will you have any issues with your pipes freezing if you drop the temperature below 68?
My wife claims if you set it too cold your pipes will freeze and you will flood out your place.
I find this to be very suspect coming from a person that is "always cold".

Sounds like my DH. I had to fight to keep the air off last night, when we came home I was freezing, he had the a/c set at 67!

Absolutely not! We've kept our thermostat at 62 degrees during the past 2 or 3 winters (see my above posts) and we've never had a problem. Yes, its chilly, but no where near cold enough to freeze pipes!
Pipes freeze and burst when they are located near an outside wall that does not get heated, or if the heat is turned off.

Funny because my wife was like "Go on and make a post on LIF about this and you will be told you are wrong."
But I was like nah since there wasn't a point to it. But now that this was mentioned I will have to show this to her.
She made it seem like anything under 68 was coooooold and when I told her I planned on putting it closer to 60 she said we would have a flood in the house. I plan on doing the same thing you do... 68 during the day... and 60-62 at night.
But I know she was only saying this so I wouldn't freeze her out this winter.

All I can say is this - it might not flood the house....but it sure looks like it's going to be a long and lonely winter for you if that's how you plan on controlling the thermostat

Re: Friendly Contest?
I keep the house at 68-70 during the day depending on how fridgid it is outside. At night my DH would keep it at 68 but that is WAY too warm to be snuggled in blankets! I turn it down to 64. I hate getting up when it's so cold in the house!
I already bought the kids lots of warm clothes so we can keep them warm without turning the heat up too high!

For years I kept the thermostat that cold at night. My Dad is home all day (disabled) and because he must have the heat on during the day we've lowered it a bit more at night. We just stocked up on flannel sheets, a down comforter and flannel pj's for him.

When my parents are in Florida for the winter, they leave their thermostat (in NY) at 55 degrees. The pipes have been fine.

Re: Friendly Contest?
I'd be careful with that. I also know someone who had their heat really low and the pipes froze. The water ruined everything-carpets, couches, tables, etc.
