Re: South Huntington
The South Huntington school district is very good. My friend has 2 children that have graduated from the HS and one currently in the HS. The HS administration is very good with the students and caring and considerate. THey go above and beyond. There are a lot of extra curricular activites like DECA, yearbook and video yearbook to name a few. The discipline is also solid there. The HS is great and the elementary and middle school are great as well.
S. Huntington the area you have to be careful with. Some neighborhoods are better than others. Drive around and take a look at neighborhoods. My friend's address is actually Huntington but her district is S. Huntington.

Re: South Huntington
my DH is from Huntington. You have to be careful with South Huntington, there are def. some rougher areas than others. My DH went to Catholic Schools, so I can't speak on the schools.

Re: South Huntington
I interned at the SD, and IMO, it is an ok district. Not fantastic, but not bad either. My DH also grew up there, but his parents sent him to catholic school. We looked at houses there, but ended up buying in east northport.
In S. Huntington, the area is very spotty, one street is not so well kept or safe, and the next is nice. Especially north of Jericho. I would suggest really checking out the street and surrounding neighborhood if you are considering buying there. If you are, feel free to FM me the address and I can probably tell you some info. good luck.

Re: South Huntington
Isn't South Huntington the same as Huntington Station? I could be wrong, but they are in the same area right?

Same area - as in they are both in the town of Huntington - but they are not the same. S. Huntington is south of Jericho and a smidge is also north of Jericho. Huntington Station is north of Jericho and butts up to Huntington proper.

Re: South Huntington/Huntington
Huntington Station is 11746 and Huntington is 11743. S. Huntington and Huntington SDs both include parts of Huntington and Huntington Station. The zip code borders are very odd. I'm a graduate of Huntington HS and my younger brother and sister are now both in S. Huntington SD. You can FM me for more info

Yes - I don't understand how Huntington Station, S. Huntington and Dix Hills can all have the same zip I guess part of it is b/c S. Huntington was once Huntingtion Station and branched off?

Re: South Huntington/Huntington
I grew up within the Township of Huntington. I wouldn't buy in either S. Huntington or Huntington school districts. But if I had to choose - I would go with Huntington over South Huntington. Based on my professional experience Walt Whitman HS (South Huntington district) has issues with gangs and drugs.

I hate to be the downer/realist here but many HS on Long Island have gang and drug issues.
I on the other hand know quite a few kids that graduated from Walt Whitman this year and are going to some big name colleges in the fall.

Re: South Huntington/Huntington
i went to walt whitman 15 years ago and it was great. my brother's children all go to south huntington schools and he doesn't mind it. we just bought a house in huntington station which we consider south huntington because its south of jericho. any where you go on long island has gangs or a drug problem. believe me i worked with troubled kids from long island for 5 years and if its a rich neigborhood you've got druggies and if its a medium neighborhood you might have gangs. just look through your area at all times of the day before you buy..good luck! and fm me if you have any other questions. everyone has their own opinions.

Not a downer at all - and you are correct about gangs & drugs on LI - but she asked about Huntington & South Huntington - between the two based on my professional experience there are less problems in Huntington. Considering I grew up in the area I know quite a few people that have graduated from Walt Whitman over the course of many years, some are good people, some ended up in big trouble.

If you are buying in huntington, try for harborfields school district. s.huntington/huntington districts are not very highly ranked compared to harborfields.

If you're concentrating on the Township of Huntington - Harborfields (Greenlawn, Centerport), Northport/East Northport and Elwood (parts of East Northport, and Elwood)school districts are all rated higher than both Huntington districts.
