Re: What do you love about living in the US?
I'd give the typical canned response of "freedom", but I'm not sure that applies so much anymore, these days
So I'll say "New York City"

I agree.
I also love how diverse our country is environmentally. We have everything from glaciers in Alaska to amazing tropical beaches in Hawaii, lush farmlands in the midwest, mountain ranges, desert, etc. I think it's such a shame that so many Americans don't consider vacationing and exploring our own country.

I agree with religous and personal freedom. But on a lighter note.. the vast climates. There are not too many other places that have Maine and California and Arizona and Colorodo. I like that :)

All of our luxuries. I was just in the caribbean and as beautiful as it is tourist wise, you still have to take into consideration the little kids selling gum on the streets day and nite and the people who work at the straw markets in 100 degree weather and the cab drivers for tourists etc... It seems they try very hard to earn the American dollar while we sit in air conditioned offices.

Traveling across this country I have come to appreciate the great beauty that is America. The mountains, oceans, cities, country.
The Grand Canyon and Old Faithful can take my breath away...I love the fact that I can hop in my car and drive from the Pacific to Atlantic without fear of being stopped by armed gunmen...a freedom that more and more countries don't have

9% goes towards healthcare, I think thats outside of the 23%...I have to look at my paystub.

We also pay a 17.5% VAT (value added tax) on everything we buy (bar food and some other things. Its usually factored into the price of things, which is why things in the UK seem so expensive. Not to mention the exchange rate currently, £1 = $2.03.

Whatever the government decides to spend it on, it's basically the same as sales tax. In the UK you also pay something called National Insurance which goes towards healthcare & unemployment benefits, that is on top of your taxes and is calculated on a sliding scale of your salary. You also pay the equivilant of $6.05 for a gallon of gas - about 80% of that the government takes in taxes - ohh not to forget "road tax" they now want to start charging anyone with a 4 wheel drive approx. $250 a year. And my all time favorite the "TV Licence" which was when I left the UK about $50 a year, if they catch you without one they'll fine about $500!
Thats why one of the things I love about living in the US is the cost of living!

Its funny, because I see the cost of living in the US quite high...maybe its regional (me living way oop north) but I find the cost of living in the UK quite low compared to what the US is. For instance, my property taxes are only £100 a month, so per year, I only pay $2400 for schools, emergency services, sanitation etc...
And as for the TV license, I think people are so used to paying it...they just do it without complaning. In my eyes, thats what we pay the BBC to produce some of their wonderful programmes and for the fantastic Radio network that we have.
