question about what i can eat- GD?
my dr. left me a message...basically i barely passed my 3 hour test and she wants me to cut out sweets like ice cream, cookies, cake, etc... she said they are going to monitor me when i go for my visits i guess with the finger prick tests.
I am at a loss for what i can eat...I guess i have to eat as if i have gestational diabetes...
Can anyone give me ideas for all meals including snacks?? TIA

I would call the doctor and ask them for the written diet that way you can get a better idea.

Definitely ask your doc. I think thats the best way to go. But definitely sweets and I know there ae some foods and fruits you definitely have to avoid that are a no no too.

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
since you're borderline, it sounds like she just wants you to cut out unnecessary sugar like cake, cookies, ice cream.
Definitely call her back, but don't be surprised if she just says to limit unnecessary sugars. That change alone might be enough to consistently push your readings where they need to be. That's generally the first step that is taken before you are put on a more restrictive diet, or in extreme cases (it doesn't sound like you are one) medications.

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
i go see her next week and she said she'll give me some kind of nutrition cheat sheet.
but until then..i'm just not sure....tonight for dinner i had one slice of pizza w/a salad...i'd usually have 2 slices, no salad.
but snacks is really where i'm confused..

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
try no snacks and 4-5 tiny meals and just NO junk AT ALL until your appt. and then when you have the list, you'll have a better idea.

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
Hi, I had GD with both of my pregnancies. Basically, you need to watch the carbohydrates in your food. I think I was allowed about 30 carbs per meal or snack. Look at nutrition labels to see how many carbs something has. A cup of milk has 12 carbs. You may want to pick up a carbohydrate guide book, and ask your doctor how many carbs you should be eating per meal/day. You may want to ask if you should see a nutritionist to guide you through this. If you have any questions, feel free to FM me. Hang in there.

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
I have GD and the biggest change I have made is eating whole wheat bread and measuring portion sizes. I still ocassionally will have 1 cookie instead of 10 or a small piece of chocolate however not very often. I would just try to watch what you eat and do portion control. You may want to see if your OB refers you to a nutrionist also. I have a diet that my endocronoligst gave me that I can FM you if you want.\ ETA: My favorite snack is whole wheat toast with one tablespoon of Peanut butter and half a banana sliced up....I'm going to have that now LOL

Re: question about what i can eat- GD?
I would try to first start by lowering the amount of sweets and see how it goes since you are just borderline - avoid soda, juice, cakes, cookies, candy, ice cream and fast food. Stay away from muffins, pancakes, bagels things like that and switch over to whole wheat bread. Those were all the big no foods on my diet from what I remember. Even limit some of the sweeter fruits (I spiked once after eating fruit salad with melons and pineapple - I stuck to 1 orange and 1 apple a day per my diet.
Some of the snacks I had were lots of cheese and whole wheat crackers, rice cakes, small fruit cups (the delmonte ones in natural fruit juice or light syrup), apple with peanut butter, handful of pretzels, cut up veggies - peppers, carrot sticks, string cheese, popcorn, yogurt (1 a day only).

I am not sure, one of my friends said try to eliminate "white" sugars from your diet. GO for whole grain and wheat.
