Spinoff-Poll about LI police
Since my earlier comment which was a poor attempt at humor over a topic that chaps my azz has now pegged me as ignorant, uncaring & for sure a minority in the thinking that many, but of course not all LI cops display abusive inappropriate behavior, we'll have a poll. That way people can answer honestly & without being judged.
P.S. That first sentence might be a run-on
maybe I AM ignorant

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
I have, often, but who am I to judge them? just b/c they don't have their siren on when they run a red light doesn't mean they're not on their way to something important. I don't let a few "bad apples" spoil the barrel.

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
i have complete admiration and respect for police officers.
however, i have a problem with seeing marked police officers driving with their phones, making rights on red, speeding without their sirens, etc. i just think it sets a bad example and makes people resentful.
also...i have no idea what the original thread was behind this about the police. i must have missed it

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
It is so funny cause as a young kid getting chased by cops for hanging out I could not stand them but... Now married to a cop and hearing the stories, some of which I play therapist to my husband about stuff he sees and has to do...I can tell you that they deserve all the respect and many don't realize that police work is 24/7. He can't turn it off. Stuff he sees in a year I will never see in my life or have to deal with...just some info I have not seen earlier posts but if you know a cop or are related I am sure you have silimar views

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
I've seen them drive recklessly and blow lights without sirens on or lights.
The fact is that even cops are not allowed to break traffic laws, but they do. I would rather have them get to my house in a hurry, however the reckless driving I could do without.

I rarely see them drive recklessly. I don't know if I'm oblivious to it or it's just so populated around here that it makes it harder for them to drive that way.
Since most of my family is in LE, if I do witness reckless driving, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume there must be a reason for it.

I agree! Plus 99% of the cops are see are just sitting on the side of the road with the radar. Very rarely do I see a police car in motion!

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
I'm not sure I'd use the word "recklessly", but I have absolutely seen POs "breaking the law" when driving. Often.
IMO, they have no business being on their cellphones while driving, parking in handicap spots at pizzerias, banks or Dunkin' Donuts, for that matter, and unless they're in pursuit of another vehicle or on their way to an emergency (with their lights and sirens on), then they have no business making a right on red where it's not permitted, running a stop sign or failing to signal when changing lanes, not to mention, doing ~50 in a 30 mph zone.
I obey the traffic laws, they should too.

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
I asked DH his thoughts on this...and he just told me that if he gets a call to a robbery, buglary...crime in progess then he may proceed to the job without the sirens on...hoping to catch the perp unaware that the police are nearby...so before you judge a PO for reckless driving you should be aware that there may be a reasonable explanation for it.
plus...there are plenty of people who are not cops who drive reckless.

yes I understand that, but how about talking on their cell phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts I see this all the time! And tailgating to get people out of their way.

on teh seatbelt issue...I know for a fact that NYPD actual gives out command disaplines if a PO is caught without their seatbelt on...I asked DH why alot of cops don't wear seatbelts, he said it was because some cops felt it got in the way when they were rushing out of the car for an emergancy...alothough I agree everyone should were a seatbelt.
The cell phone thing is also annoying...but again if caugt they are given a CD.
The tailgating...annoying yes...but ever notice how people slow up as soon as they see a cop...I can't tell you how many times I see cops get boxed in on the LIE because everyone slows up when they notice them...they probably do this just to get around everyone who slowed up.
I know that cops are NOT above the law and they should always follow the law...however who the hell are we to be so critical when I'm sure most of us are guily of talking on our cells from time to time.

Re: Spinoff-Poll about LI police
Thank you for your honesty & taking the time to reply. I can honestly say I NEVER talk on my phone without my headset & I won't even move my car out of the driveway w/o my seatbelt. Did I tailgate & speed when i was a kid? Yes, but now as a responsible part of society no. I drive like a granny & everyone that has ever been in my car knows it. I'm not about bending the law.
