I think I have a complex

about not being where I would like to be in my life at 27. I'm married, but still in grad school, make cr@p for $$$, can't buy a house for however long...I don't even know what I'm going to do career-wise after grad school since I don't want to stay in academia. Forget about having children in the next 5 years.

Anyone else feel this way? It just got me to thinking, since I realized that I can barely live 3 months if I were to lose my income.

We are friends with a couple our age, and they do so much better than us. They are stable financially and can have kids soon. I feel like DH and I are still living as just older college students.

Sometimes I get like this. We are 27, and we rent, have debt, no house, and no kids. It'll be at least 3 years before we can even afford a house.
But - we are happy and love each other. For that we definitely feel blessed. Honestly, we're still young.
My parents always tell me when I get down that at my age, they had NOTHING. Our Christmas' were crayons and coloring books because that was all they could afford. I think for many, including me and DH, we expect to have all that our parents have - but they are 30 years older and have put in their time.
I'm not saying this is you and your DH, but I can see myself falling into that category at times.

Yeah, when I get down I think that at least we have each other. I guess I'd be happier if I liked grad school and felt like I was going somewhere in my life. Just a lot of uncertainty. Chat Icon

But I couldn't be happier with my DH and a lot of people haven't met their love at the age of 27, so I'm blessed for that (and my health of course).

I think you're being too hard on yourself. Chat Icon Everyone who goes to get a doctorate is in the same boat. You're comparing yourself to people working full-time for 5 or 6 years..I'm working full time and going for my doctorate full time, and I still feel like all my paycheck goes to loans. Chat Icon

My point is, your time will come. You've chosen a different path than people who work right away, but that doesn't mean you won't get to that point (and further--statistics show that the higher degrees do usually pay off!).

Yes, many people your age have kids, but it's not that one decision is right, it's just different. Chat Icon You're not behind; it's not a race.
