If you had an amnio.....

Could you give me any information you have on it....what it was like, what made you decide to have it, did you get a local anesthesia, what were the statistics you heard about miscarriage and pre-term labor and did you have any complications or side effects. Also did you talk to a genetic counselor beforehand, or just your doctor. I need to speak to my doctor about all of this ( I did a little already)...but I just wanted to hear about others experiences.....thanks.

Re: If you had an amnio.....

I dont know much about it except that I have been told the MC rate is caused by the experience of the Dr doing it...so if I was gonna do it I would reserach the dr well....

Re: If you had an amnio.....

I had an amnio done because my mother's brother was born with down syndrome but thank god the baby is fine. My doctor sent me to the genetic counselor who you speak with before you have the amnio done. They go through your family history and basically give you an idea of the chance your baby will be born with down syndrome. You don't have to make an appointment that day to do the amnio, you can call back when you decide but they will tell you which day you should have it done. The chance for miscarriage is about 1/1000 from what I remember, but it was def not lower than 1/1000. I had no complications from it at all. It was a bit scary when you think about it but the procedure was not as bad as i thought it would be.

I had no complication. No local anesthesia. I just rested for 3 days (feet up!), drank plenty of water like they told me.

Re: If you had an amnio.....

I had an amnio and had spoken to a genetic counselor and my doctor. I spoke to the GC more about the risks, complications, and what we would do if the outcome of the amnio was bad news. I also spoke to my Dr. about the risks, complications, her experience in performing amnios, and what her recommendation was. I didn't have local anesthesia. It was performed in the hospital and my Dr. was assisted by a radiologist. The amnio took only a couple of minutes and it didn't really hurt at all. I was on bedrest for the next 2-3 days and didn't experience any cramping or side effects. The results of the amnio came back and everything was fine. Hope this helps. Chat Icon

My decision process was complicated, as is every decision for me. Chat Icon . I posted about it and you may be able to find my posts.

The most common stat I heard was a miscarriage rate of a little less than 1 per 100. The procedure felt very weird. I had a shooting sensation down my pelvis but I would not even call it pain, exactly. Later on, I felt fine but once in a while I would get a milder form of that same feeling. 2 days later, I had issues with dizziness, but that was completely unrelated. I was anemic and I didn't know it yet. I rested for 2 full days, mostly on the advice of the girls here. I did walk around my house a little, do some work at my desk and go into the yard. I was restless but I tried to behave!

Also, I wish I had known that the doctor uses betadine (the red stuff) and lots of it to prep your belly for the needle. When you leave the office, you might still have traces of it on your belly. It stains, so I would not wear white. I didn't happen to get any on my clothes at all but that could have happened so easily.

This is not an easy decision! Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am one person who had a very complicated amnio procedure and lost a son due to it. I will never tell anyone not to have one done, but why do you need one?

Re: If you had an amnio.....

I had an amnio, but it was very late in my PG. I had to get it to determine if DS's lungs were mature enough to do a pre-term c-section. I had my first one at 36 weeks, and my second at 37w2d. There was no local anesthesia, but I did not feel it the first time. The second time I went to the amnio appointment while I was having contractions & did not know it (long story).

I would highly recommend Dr. Macenzie at Madonna in Mineola. He is very skilled and his assistants are fantastic. He also has a great bedside manner, which makes the whole process a lot easier.

I actually decided against it since my Aunt happened to be one of those 1 in 100 who had a miscarriage from it. It was 20 yrs ago and I am sure things have changed but I just remember the whole situtition as a kid and it still freaked me a little.

Re: If you had an amnio.....

I had an amnio because onthe 20 week sono they saw a marking on DD bowel and heart and that could be linked to Downs. I could not wait the rest of the pregnancy to know if my baby had Downs because i felt I needed to prepare differently for a child with special needs. The procedure was very simple first they did a sono to see where DD was in my bellly and then they gave one needle to numb the area and then the needle. It felt like alot of pressure and before I knew it I was all finished. I stayed off my feet for 3-4 days and watched movies all day... I got the preliminary results 3 days later and all was fine. It is a hard decision but I felt i needed to know and I would do it again if it came down to it...
Good luck it is definately a personal choice but only one in a line of decisions you have to make when having a child... Good luckChat Icon
