I had a kidney infection last year at this time (right after giving birth to my daughter). I ended up severely dehydrated, with super low blood pressure, and with very sharp shooting pains in my left back, right under where my ribs were.
I ended up in the hospital for a week!!
I had an infected and enlarged kidney. And I also have a 5mm stone in my kidney, but it was NOT the cause of the infection, so it was left alone and I still have it, with no problems *knock on wood*
I had what they called a UPJ Obstruction. It was an obstruction where the kidney drains to the ureter. Well, it wasn't draining and it was backing up in my kidney. I had a small operation to blast away the obstruction and the doc inserted a stent. I had the stent in for 6 weeks and then it was removed.
ETA: I was on a super-mega dose of Levaquin (antiobiotic) for a month!!
So far so good. I do have to see my urologist again in June for another check-up and then I will more than likely have to go once a year.
Please follow up and take care of yourself 
I am on the same meds... I can't wait for this work week to end.. all I want to do is stay in my bed and since this is a new job I dont want to take off

OMG
I had a very severe kidney/urinary infection that landed me in the ER and the hospital overnight. The pain was just inexplicable and even demerol didn't help!!!!! Good luck!!! Feel better!
