In this day and age of "affirmative action", nothing really surprises me anymore. It's a complete double standard, and you KNOW that if something like that was said on the "flip side" referring to whites, Rev. Al Sharpton himself would be all over it.

I think it's disturbing that many people posting on this board seem to find Oprah's comments more offensive than the incident on the Opie & Anthony show. IMO.

when you single out a race like this, you open yourself up to criticism like this. Oprah, who I believe is a philanthropist of epic proportions, has taken much liberty in saying things like this in my recent memory.
This is the woman who with one sentence about a book or product she "likes" can sell MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of them. She has gotta know how every word she says is gospel to some people and scrutinized by others.

I listened to the speech. Had I been there, I would have applauded everything she said except when she said I have some good white folk working for me. She could have just said people. People are overly sensitive about race and she of all people should know that. I'm happy she has good white folk working for her. But if Donald Trump had said he has some good black folk working for him would that be acceptable?
It's a shame we still live in a world where we are categorized by the color of our skin. Where we check a box on an application to state our color. Aren't we all just people? Does it make me more or less of a person because of the color of my skin.

I don't agree. The comments on the radio show can be interpreted as degrading toward women. The comments in Oprah's speech are being interpreted by many on this thread as degrading toward white people. On this thread, many people seem to be saying that Oprah is racist, should be more sensitive in this day and age, etc. On the O&A thread, many people seemed to be saying that O&A have the right to free speech, are being censored, are cool for flying in the face of political correctness, etc. Not much in the thread about them being sexist or insensitive. I truly don't understand why comments about rape on a radio show aren't being met with the same level of outrage as I'm seeing here on this thread. Very disturbing to me.

My best friend graduated from Howard this past weekend & said that Oprah's speech was the highlight of the ceremony & she felt very empowered by her words.
She is speaking at an AA college & the quote is probably taken out of context.
that's good to hear! - since it was their graduation cermony- really only their opinion matters!

Just out of curiousity - if she had been speaking at an all female university, and she had said the same story, as beth suggested earlier, substituting the word "men" for "white folk" would anyone raise an eyebrow? I dont think that "white folk" is a derogatory term.... Clearly people are going to talk about race at an predominantly black university! I think it's fine that she said she had some good white folk working for her! she didnt say i have some dumb azz honkies working for me!

I heard much more of her speech on the radio this morning and the parts of her speech that were posted on this thread are taken completely out of context are are very deceptive the way they're written. She didn't even say those two sentences back to back in the speech - easy to make something sound racist or offensive if the media (or anyone) is going to change the order of the words
Heard in context, I don't find her statements offensive and if you actually listen to the speech, the comments will make a lot more sense.

I totally agree. People are the most sensitive when they feel they are being talked about. Oprah was talking about what her grandmother had said to her and she needed to reply in the same terms. To me speaking to an AA crowd, she was simply stating how far we as a people have come. Remember segregation was not that long ago. Times have changed. People are so quick to jump on the race wagon and completely forget what was really being said.

I don't think what she said was wrong. I applaud her for her success. But at the same time I can see where people can get offended.
Race is such a touchy subject. Minorities don't want to be discriminated against, and white people get aggrivated when miniorities get away with discriminating against them because it SEEMS to be more acceptable.
I probably would have liked the speech better if she focused on the fact that she is a strong, successful, black woman who over came all the odds.

I don't think you can compare the two at all.
If a white person said it, it would have a totally different meaning given the history of race in this country. Oprah made this statement as an example of how far African Americans have come. Since Whites did not have to fight for their civil rights and did not have to face a long history of discrimination, prejudice, and racism, it is not an "accomplishment" for Whites to have AAs working for them...they always have. AAs were not always afforded that opportunity and that is what Oprah was trying to communicate from my perspective.

Exactly. Clearly her point was to comment on her triumph over what grandma saw as a life destined in slavery. She was not belitting white people by saying that they now work for her. There was a point to her comment and it's being taken out of context. I don't think it was offensive, sensitive yes but i don't really see the big deal honestly.

BTW, Howard is not an AA college. It is predominantly attended by AA students. But there may have been some non AA students in the graduating class who could've taken offense.
I don't see how the point would've been lost had she just said something like, "..and now just look at how many people I have working for me!"
But whatever, Oprah did bust her arse, and I'm sure she stepped on a lot of people's heads to get to where she is today.

I heard the entire speech and it wasnt appropriate, what was worse was how the whole crowd cheered Why do people have to go to school for ten plus years for a doctorate and she gets one for no good reason?
