Regardless of the context, it's inappropriate. She would crucify someone had they said the same thing regarding black people, Asian people, Indian people, etc...

I guess I just see what she said differently
IMO- she is saying- wow- look how far I and we have come- 50 years ago the best job for a woman like my Grandma could get was a SERVANT in house- and here I am a BILLIONAIRE
which is a gaint step for WOMEN and for African Americans- she is pointing out how much the world has changed in a short amount of time!
Oprah is not a racist - you can like her or hate her- but to call her that is unfair- she does so much good thru her angle network and helps so many people- it makes me sick that someone would call her that!

That is so not true. She has helped so many people regardless of the color of their skin. For you to say that is just plain wrong and unfair.
People always find something to put down this woman. You would think we as women would be so happy to see a woman in her position.
I am so sick of all the race issues. I just cannot stand it. Why can't we just live as one and stop with this whol;e racist thing. I just cannot live my life judging anyone based on the color of their skin. I was not raised that way. I love all people. This is so freaking frustrating to me.

the point would have been lost had she not said "white folks" - but it seems that people would prefer to miss the point anyway and look at 1 sentence from a speech - instead of the whole speech- taking it out on context- but to each his/her own

If we're being honest, I didn't listen to the whole speech, so I was passing judgement on the one sentence... The point may have been lost but for someone like her, she should choose her words carefully, you're always going to offend someone, right?

I'm extremely happy that a woman hold the cards that she does... she's a very powerful woman and has done nothing but worked her asss off to get there..
The fact that she helps people doesn't give her the right to do and say anything she wants. I don't think Oprah is a racist at all, I honestly don't. I do however feel that she has this "I'm better than everyone attitude". That's JMO... it's difficult to watch her have a guest of her show that she is contantly interupting and putting down...I'm vering off the topic of the OP, but that's just my feeling on Oprah... you either love her or hate her.

when you single out a race like this, you open yourself up to criticism like this. Oprah, who I believe is a philanthropist of epic proportions, has taken much liberty in saying things like this in my recent memory.
This is the woman who with one sentence about a book or product she "likes" can sell MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of them. She has gotta know how every word she says is gospel to some people and scrutinized by others.

Oprah ( who I like actually ) was speaking at a COLLEGE. She is a prominent leader in the A-A community and is often seen as a spokesperson for issues that are important for A-A's, women etc.
Opie and Anthony are "shock jocks" that have a COMEDY radio show - and they allowed an uneducated homeless man to make some stupid remarks.
I see a HUGE DIFFERENCE here.
ETA: i am NOT offended by either comment nor have i ever been offended by ANY comments made by a public figure - however, I just wanted to clarify why these two incidents should not even be compared.

My best friend graduated from Howard this past weekend & said that Oprah's speech was the highlight of the ceremony & she felt very empowered by her words.
She is speaking at an AA college & the quote is probably taken out of context.
