DUI/DWI
All the talk of Paris Hilton surprises me because I hear many people blowing off the DUI portion as not a big deal. Maybe I'm biased since my sister was very seriously hurt when she was hit by a drunk driver but I think DUI and DWI are very serious offenses. You essentially have a weapon with your car and have lost your capability to drive properly. I think DUI/DWI should be treated as serious offenses -- I'm not saying major jail time necessarily but I do feel suspended license at the very least is fair.
Your thoughts?

I remember being at a bbq for Memorial Day probably 5 or 6 years ago and all of the sudden overhearing my cousin and some thers talking about driving home after having a few too many. I was SHOCKED. I don't know - maybe becuase it has been drilled into my head how wrong it is - I looked at him differently after that.

I think anyone who gets behind the wheels impaired should be punished harshly. It is very dangerous for anyone to be impaired and driving. They put other people's lives at risk as well.
I have no sympathy for DUI/DWI offenders. They should be dealt with very HARSHLY.

I agree, she deserves the jail time! Anyone who does this should get it with a large fine. My cousin got way too many DWI's and much jail time, gut there also has to be a rule, 3 times in for the same crime and you are there for more than 5 years. JMP.

I think it's a huge deal. I do think jail time is severe...and I also think that in this case, the judge really had it out for her and is more proving a point--that even when you're rich, sometimes you gotta pay the man, anyway. I agree with you; a suspended license is fair. One part of me says...you know, she was caught driving twice since being suspended; she should go to jail. If for nothing more than a "fine" is too simple for her to handle.

i totally agree with you! they are very serious offenses! you are never as sober as you think you are! i work at an elementary school and this passed fall, a 10 year old girl at my school lost her mom because of a drunk driver. and the girl could have very easily been killed too becasue she was in the front seat next to her mom.
the drunk driver that hit them was a women who had her own 3 year old daughter in the car with her!!! she had been at a party, they tried to keep her from leaving but she didn't listen- instead she put her own 3 year old daughter at risk AND killed another little girls mom.....

Either one is a serious offense. As you said, the car is a weapon and if you are impaired at all, you are using that weapon to hurt and possibly kill someone.
Anyone who does this should get the book thrown at them, if only because there are so few caught of the number of people who actually do drive impaired.

I have no sympathy for anyone who gets behind the wheel after drinking.
I know a few people who have been caught. And complain about how "inconvenienced" they are with the fines, the probation and sometimes jail time. You know what..TOO bad...you're just very lucky you didn't hurt or kill anyone!

Same here.
I think the harsher, the better... Then maybe people will think twice before they drink and drive.
As for Paris- she violated her probation and she has priors for DUI! She should have been sent to jail the FIRST time around and wasn't-- now she has a second chance and does it AGAIN.
Unbelievable! She is lucky she didn't kill someone b/c we all know the drunk driver ALWAYS walks away.
This is a sore spot for me... Last Saturday was the five year anniversary of my TWENTY YEAR OLD friend being killed... He never made it home that night because someone got behind the wheel drunk and couldn't just call a cab or not drink as much and be responsible. Of course, the driver walked away with a scratch. He left my friend dead and another friend of mine SERIOUSLY injured (he was in the Hospital for months).
So, May 5th was the five year anniversary and on June 3rd of this year we will be doing a walk for MADD in honor of my friend Kenny... at Farmingdale College. I'm currently raising money-- Money that goes to the victim's families to help them try to get out of bed everyday when a loved one of theirs is killed by a DD... They pay for them to see a counselor and of course they raise money to help try and make the laws tougher. They provide victim's services and aid them when it's time for the family members and loved ones to write a "victim impact statement" for the courts-- that they can say to the driver on their day of "sentencing".
I use the word "sentencing" loosely as my friend Kenny was killed and another boy seriously injured... One 20 years old, the other only 19... And the driver himself was under the age of 21 and should not have even been drinking to begin with-- yet he was "sentenced"  to 60 DAYS behind bars... He was out in just over a month on "good behavior"...
So, I guess Paris' sentence is harsh considering the driver in my friend's case KILLED someone and spent less time in jail

Why should Paris be treated any differently? Isn't she a U.S. citizen? Doesn't she have to pay taxes and obey the rules like the rest of us? I'm sorry but if I get behind the wheel intoxicated, get caught and get sentenced to 45 days in jail, then that's the price to pay.

Paris needs to shut up and pay the time for what she did. Drunk driving is one of THE most selfish and stupidest things you can possibly do. I don't care if you're a celebrity or if you live out of your car.
We've turned into a society where people don't think they should be held accountable for their actions and that is really sad.
Instead of paying her time and potentially using this opportunity to educate others about the dangers of drunk driving and being accountable for your actions, she is pulling the "but I'm famous! I can't go to jail! This is so unfair and so not a big deal."
So sad.

I do believe that you should be penalized & don't think jail is too harsh especially when you are a repeat offender like Paris. She had her license suspended & they found her driving the other day. Just because she is a celebrity should not mean anything. Maybe if a celebrity was made an example of, someone would realize. If this was your ordinary citizen, there would not be a retrial.
This is a sore spot for me as I had a cousin kill himself over 20 years ago because he went out to his brother's bachelor party & got drunk. Everyone took his keys from him & when someone was not looking, he got his keys back. He got in his car & went onto the Wantagh Parkway the wrong way & killed an off duty cop & himself.
I will not touch my keys if I have had one drink. People do not realize how your skills definately do get impaired. Your car becomes a weapon & innocent people could be injured or worse, killed. Harsher penalties are definately needed.
