Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

Not discussed. Friends don't ask.

If asked, I would decline. How much people make isn't important to me.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

My friends don't know how much I make and I don't know how much they make. I don't even know what my own brother makes and vice versa.

IF someone asked me, I'd give a vague answer. I personally feel it's none of anyone's business but mine and my husband's.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I have never told the exact number to anyone other than the bank or DH. My friends and family have a general idea.

Friends have told me only because they were looking for advice.

Otherwise, it's not discussed.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I NEVER discuss money. My mother always told me it was rude. My husband gets annoyed when someone we know buys something big (house, car ect) he'll ask me how much did they pay for it? I would never ask. Not even family or my closest friends. It's none of my buisness.

When I was working I didn't tell anyone how much I made nor did I ever ask. Even my family doesn't know how much I used to make or what our income is now.

Before we were married DH used to tell his parents how much he made and what his bonus was, and then they'd blab it to the neighbors and their friends, so that he has stopped telling them.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

Even when I had a government job, most of my friends didn't really know. They could have found out but I do not think they really tried.

The only friend who has even asked in recent years is a very competitive person, who would just find out my number and make up something higher (even if I didn't ask).

Many of my friends are not in my field but I still feel like I have a very good feel for what people earn in my field. I don't see a reason to compare myself to friends in other fields. Most of my friends did not go into the field where they could earn the most. They made lifestyle choices. So, their salary is not an estimate of their true value in this world.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

Friends have told me what they make - but I don't volunteer my numbers. I've never been the type to do so in any way - GPA, SAT scores, Salary, etc.

When I switched jobs I may have said to my friend "I got a 35% increase" I never would get specific.

Some yes, some no. Some of our friends are open about it and we are with them but we're vague with those that are closed mouth about it because usually they don't want to discuss it. Honestly I don't see what the big deal is and neither does DH. We're all in similar industries so we have a rough idea and if people ask me what my profession pays I have no problem telling them.

Do you know EXACTLY (not guessing, but they told you) how much your friends make???

Is it something you openly discuss? If one of my friends (a close one) asked me, I would probably tell them. But thats never happened, so I never felt the need to tell someone how much $$ I make - if I get a raise, i'll say "woo hoo I got a nice raise today" but never "I got a $10k raise" or whatever.

Yes, for many of my close friends I know exactly what they make. It's openly discussed around bonus time and raise time since we all worked at the same firm for years. Now that many of us have changed jobs it still comes up as a comparison of what in-house pays versus law firms since so many people assume that to go in-house you will take a huge paycut from the law firm jobs. That is not always true.

My best friend also recently told me her exact salary around raise time. It came up since she was pennies away from the next $1,000 increment and she was annoyed. She is not in my industry and I would never have known her salary unless she told me.

One friend even recently told me a ballpark figure of her husband's salary and how long it took him to break into that tax bracket. I did not ask and she volunteered that info. We were discussing average salaries since she is considering a job change and we were updating her resume - including adding salary requirements per one job posting.

None of the discussions are ever negative. It's not at all in a comparative way about who makes more or who can afford more stuff. We are just not secretive or hung up on who makes how much money so it's not a big deal to discuss.

I do have some not-so-close friends that I would NEVER share such info with.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I think most of our friends have a vague idea what everyone else makes, but no specific figures. I have no problem telling if someone asks, but I would never think to ask my friends, it doesn't matter to me.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

No, I really don't see the point in discussing salaries with friends or family. We're all in different industries and varying brackets.

My personal opinion is that it's tacky to do so...

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

If someone close to me were to ask then I would tell them, but typically I am not asked so I do not share. In fact I don't think anyone has asked me since I first got out of the Navy a few years ago. I have discussed what we paid for our house with a couple of friends moving to the area. I think of that as more informative and less personal for some reason.
