I told my doctor right from the start that I didnt want the amnio - that was never a question - thats why I wanted people's opinions on the statistics....
Trust me, ladies - i would never jeopardize my baby that way!!!
hee...i didn't read the whole thread and see where you stated you weren't getting one. the whole thought just...

you sound like you are clear headed on your decision which is great! I think if you did an amnio it only makes u have to make a choice which u may not want to have to make. Like alot of the girls said...the amnio has false positives and all kinds of problems! I am sure everything will run smoothly for you

I'm not sure it this helps but I have 2 friends that received false positives on the AFP test and thier children are fine and perfectly healthy. Just wanted to give . I am sure everything will be fine.

Re: AFP results back - I need some reassurrance, please!
I had quite a scare with my first pregnancy...quite a scare. After doing some research, asking medical people, etc. I found out that the neck measurement is perhaps the most important piece of the 12-16 week tests. (I'm a little confused about your tests--do you have the nuchal test, plus two blood tests--one at the nuchal sono and one at 16 weeks? That was mine. Evidently it's the most accurate, but the final results are combined at 17 weeks.)
So...as long as the first test was good...don't stress it. You'll have the Level II and hopefully be assured all is fine!
Good luck to you!!

If you had an ultrascreen they are not supposed to redo the test for downs. The AFP should only be done to screen for spina bifida.
Mine was done for all 3 on the AFP after I had my Ultrascreen.
The genetics center I went to specifically told me it is not to be repeated. I wonder why though if so many people have it redone.
Interesting. The AFP tests for 3 things; Downs, SB and Trisomy 18. Does the US test for T18?

I forgot the Trisomy 18. I know the told me the 1st blood test was just for the downs and they shouldn't retest for that. Maybe they did at my OB and just didn't tell me. Who knows. All was OK so I didn't ask many questions. The genetics center I went to specifically told me it is not to be repeated. I wonder why though if so many people have it redone.

Re: AFP results back - I need some reassurrance, please!
My mother's last pregnancy wound up being a false positive. She was against the amnio, so we went through the whole pregnancy preparing for the outcome.
My brother was born fine. After that experience, I went into the AFP test knowing that absolutely nothing is written in stone.
