Just curious to what you would all think of this...

MIL has a history of ignoring wishes when it comes to DD.

She watches DD 3x per week.

DD is always happy when you pick her up, so you always bite your tongue and ignore the "differences" in parenting style. DH is usually the one that gets annoyed and says stuff to her.

You go to pick up DD (she will be 2 in 3 weeks) and her nails are painted. The nail polish is the "smells-like-nailpolish kind"

Discuss.....

ETA: The issue of nailpolish has never been brought up or discussed in the past, but DD has never had nailplish on. It was something that you would have probably liked to have done with her yourself for the first time.

Would say something. *I* personally think 2 is too young for nail polish. Fingers in her mouth yada yada. I couldn't NOT say anything.

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

I wouldn't care..

I paint my daughter's nails ALL the time and I use the same stuff on them that I use on my own nails..

My girls are 4 and 2 and they've been getting their nails done since they were around a year old..

IMO, there's alot "worse" things she could be doing!

Unless you explicitly said no, I think I would just say "It's cute, but please don't do it again - it can be harmful to her if she ingests it."

If you said no and she did it anyway we would have a big problem.

If you expressed that you didn't want DDs nails painted and when she was picked up her nails were painted - I would absolutely be pisssed. She had the chance to raise her kids the way she wanted - your daughter isn't hers to 'raise.'

Agreed!

I remember it being a fine line when ILs watched DS regularly. I probably would just complain to my friends/dh and not say anything but thats just me!

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

id have been bummed and miffed

You can't possibly predict everything to tell her NOT to do. Its impossible. Even most of what you know you want her not to do may make you sound like a paranoid momma (like me).

But yeah.. her first nail job is momma's. Chat Icon Id have expressed my saddness that it was taken away from me. I also would have mentioned I didn't do it yet because of the toxic results. Then asked her please not to do it again, even go so far as to say "hopefully she'll forget and one day she and I can do it together and it will again be a special mom and me moment"

Edited for spelling errors

This is something she really should have discussed with you first! You may want to tell her how disappointed you are and ask her to discuss things like this with you first in the future. Or ask DH to tell her this. Chat Icon

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

Ok so here is what I did....

I got to MIL's and DD came running over to me to say hello. MIL says show mommy your nails. DD says MAMA...."pretty NAILS!!!" and hold out her hands. I obviously made a big deal tellng her it was cute cause she was s excited and happy about it.

I asked MIL how she got her t sit still. Apparently DD asked her to cut her nails and MIL says she was mesmorized by the "color" and sat still for it.

When I picked her up I immediately smelled the nail polish-y smell of it (Im pg so maybe thats why).

I got in the car and got a little sad/annoyed because I wanted to take her myself to the nail salon when she was a little older. She isnt a hands-in-the-mouth kind of kid, but she's almost 2....sometimes they are in there, especially if she is eating.

I told DH and he is p*ssed and wants to say something to her tomorrow but I feel like we should just take it off and say she was putting her hands in her mouth and we didnt want her eating it.

I am torn because it isnt the end of the world, it DOES look cute, and MIL certaintly was not beng malicious...she never is...she just doesnt think sometimes.

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

*I* would be annoyed. It's something you'd like to do first with her (I totally agree on that), plus I agree, some nail polish is really stinky and not appropriate for a toddler IMO. I'd definitely be annoyed Chat Icon

I painted my DD's nails for the first time a few weeks ago...she's 3.5 years Chat Icon I bought special non-toxic nailpolish (Piggy Paint). So cute, but comes off so easily!

Just for her safety something needs to be said. Real nail polish should not be used by toddlers. I would use that angle.

I would be bummed that I wasn't the one to paint her nails first. It would probably really annoy me, but at the end of the day no harm was done and I would let it go.

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

since its never been discussed you cant really be mad at her, she didnt know it was something you wanted to have as a special first time with her,
i dont think i'd be mad if my mom went with my girls to get their nails done the first time (i know its your mil)
whether its the absolute first time or just the first time with you that time will be special
i would just casually say i see you painted dd's nails, i think 2 is still a little young for it i would appreciate if you held of on doing that again until i feel shes ready

I wouldn't be ****** at all. I would be sad that I didn't get to be part of that first. But you will still get a first - you will be the first to take her to a nail salon. That is very special too and she probably will remember that more.

I'd also be very happy that MIL is spending quality time with her. It's hard to keep a 2 year old occupied.

Re: Just curious to what you would all think of this...

My mother did the same thing when Lily was about 2.
I had been planning on painting Lily's nails soon...and she got to it first. I was a little sad at first, but now, I realize it was no big deal!
Lily loved it, and still loves getting her nails painted. I've painted her nails more times than I can count....we go to the nail salon and get them done together....it's great!
So, even thought I missed her "first" time, I've made up for it!

Oh, and I always use regular nail polish on Lily. Never had a problem. Chat Icon

I posted my reaction a few above....

I said that I felt the same way and knew MIL wasnt being malicious.

We took it off and gave her a bath. DH will tell MIL that we didnt want her putting her hands in her mouth.
