Zika virus and traveling to the Dominican
We have a family trip planned for July to the Dominican. My mother is very nervous about the virus, being that my siblings are in their child bearing years. Not sure if we should cancel and go somewhere else. She wants to do it before she purchases airfare.
Also, are there any safe places in the Caribbean. I mean, I know not all are posted now, but my thought is eventually it will make it there.
Thank you!

Well it's 5 months away- I would give it some time before cancelling. Also you don't know where this virus will go. Only time will tell. I would wait before making a decision. I remember our honeymoon we went to the Dominican and there was something going on there? I don't recall what though. I posted on here everyone said go- ultimately we did go and didn't change and had an amazing time. If i find the post I will bump it for you

Unless you are booking with an airline that will allow you to cancel with no penalties, I would probably book elsewhere.

Agreed that now is not a buggy time in the Caribbean, so by July probably all the islands will be on the list. I would plan somewhere domestic instead if people are going to be TTC.

The CDC says that the virus will not affect any plans of a future pregnancy. If anyone should contract the virus, it will be in their blood for about a week and then gone. So a future pregnancy would be safe.
Not sure if that helps. I would probably still go.

I mean there's been 4 cases in Suffolk County, right? So I don't think i would avoid a trip.

Those 4 people had traveled to areas that were affected though. So it's not actually here yet in terms of being transmitted here by mosquitoes (it's not mosquito season either)
But having said that, I'd still go. Unless I was pregnant or planning to be trying during the time of the trip

Unless they are planning to get PG, I would go. The CDC and doctors I have asked are recommending women wait 10 days or 1 cycle before TTC.

And with all the panic, I can imagine getting some GREAT deals to these places!

Then why would they be worried about it?

Someone told my mother that it could stay in your system for up to 2 years

No. As per the cdc it's in your system for less than 2 weeks.

That's not true. The two year wait is for people who live in countries that have presently have mosquitoe epidemics of Zika. Basically, there is no vaccine or cure yet and if you live somewhere that is ridden with Zika mosquitoes it is nearly impossible not to get bit. That is why some countries have recommended putting off TTC for 2 years.

Re: Zika virus and traveling to the Dominican
This virus CAN cause Guillain-Barre syndrome, so the risk isn't just for those TTC or already PG. Guillain Barre is rare though they are saying.

Exactly. One person took that 2 year thing, misunderstood it and ran with it. Then rumors and panic run wild. That is why I go right to the CDC website for info on things like this, ebola, etc.... rather than listen to internet rumors etc Go to the CDC website, find the details and send it to whoever is going on the trip- and make an informed decision that way

I was called uneducated by someone because I mentioned to them what the cdc said because they got some quote from some "news source" that says otherwise.

Ironic that you were the uneducated one in that case. This from someone who gets their health info from HLN.

Zika virus and traveling to the Dominican
The CDC says to wait a month before TTC after a trip. But, not enough research has been done to confirm that IMO. I would change a trip if I wanted to TTC. We did. My sister and I want children within a year. Our doctor advised us not to go because there is not enough research. IMO not worth the risk.

We cancelled a trip to St. John in March, but we are TTC. My dr said that it lasts in your body for 1 week, and then after that you are good to go, but I am also wondering if there may be longer term lingering effects that we just don't know about. I probably wouldn't be thinking as much into this if we weren't TTC, but it's not worth the risk for us right now.
