Need help - traveling to the Dominican Republic

Has anyone taken an infant there?

My ped recommended Aralen to help prevent Malaria. They don't make it in liquid form, but I found a chemist that will do it, but only a month's supply. His Rx is for 6 weeks, so I'd have to get a second part once we're back. It also has to be refrigerated. I found out the hotel has minibars, so that should be ok.

It just seems like a lot to go through...so I just wanted to see if anyone else has done this before. It's stressing me out.

How will you keep it cold on the plane and en route to the airport/hotel, etc.? It does seem like a lot of work. I think I would stay home or go somewhere else, that's just me though.

Not really an option, it's my sister's wedding. I could keep it in a cold pack en route...who knows. I have a call in to the ped to see if it's a necessity.

I don't know if it's a DR thing, but we're taking DS to Mexico this summer and the Dr. didn't mention anything. To be honest, I'm just not overly nervous about things like that. I would probably skip the medication.

That's what I'm leaning towards...just checking with the ped too. I'm not overly nervous, the fact that this is so difficult makes me more nervous. I'm hoping she just says skip it, it's fine...just wanted to see if anyone else had any experiences.

You could bring a cold pack. I would bring "several" in a lunch box or something of that sort. I am sure you can give it to the flight attendant to keep it cool in a fridge in the plane.

But remember that you have to go through custom, bus to go to the hotel, then register to go to your room. It may take a while. Especially if the bus goes to several resorts. Ours did. When are you travelling? I went there last August. It was hot and humid.

Also, remember to take the dr.'s note with you with DC's name on it. They may request it that the airport.

Thanks, we're leaving next Thursday. I just dropped the Rx off at the pharmacy.

I don't have a drs note. I just had the Rx from her, which is now at the pharmacy. Do you think I need something else?

I would not take a chance with that - definitely give him the medication. I got very sick from a trip to DR once and it wouldn't have happened if I would have gotten the proper vaccine first.

As for keeping it cold, I would ask the flight attendant if they could keep the ice pack and medication in the fridge for you while on the plane then you only have to worry about it keeping it cool while en route to the airport & hotel and back.

I doubt that keeping it cold is all that important anyway.

I would call the airline to find out what type of documentation you need for the Rx.

Re: Need help - traveling to the Dominican Republic

I questioned the keeping it cold factor only because you might not be able to bring a cold pack since it's a form of liquid and there are restrictions on liquids. I would check with the airline and ask them. and defininately get a doctors note that says it needs to stay cold.
