There are certain things that need antibiotics. One of them is strep. I was told by my ped, that babies don't get strep because they do not have the tonsil tissue yet and the youngest case of it my ped has seen was at 18 months.

You are right. It is rare. However, my kid had it at 11 months. That is just how he rolls. He doesn't like rules or norms. Chat Icon

ETA: It could be because his tonsils are extra gigantic. Everyone who looks into his mouth takes a step back. But, he hasn't had the magic 6 streps in one year so he still has them. (he had it 5 times one year.. not 6). However, as much as I was thinking my doctor was an idiot for not taking them out (I even got a second opinion).... DS is growing out of it. So I guess he was right.

there is some thinking that under 1 year or 2 - antibiotics shouldn't be given..
where do you stand?

I am curious where you have read/heard this?

As many have said there is a time an appropriate time and place for them. A bacterial infection needs the meds to go away. Viral they are useless. They key is in knowing which one you are dealing with. I only give them when they are needed. I have turned them down once when I thought DD had strep but did not. The doctor wanted to give them to her for a sinus infection I did not believe she had since it was the 1st day she was sick (sore throat, fever, vomiting and headache had been exposed to strep) I was right she was better in 2days. I only took her for the strep test or I would have waited.

My 1st did not get antibiotics until 4 for strep. My second got them at 10 months for a double ear infection. We waited a bit bc she was not uncomfortable but it got worseso I gavd them.

I think it is important to know your ped and that they are not quick to medicate.

But antibiotics do have a time and a place. Strep can cause serious complications if not treated. But there are some doctors who will give them out for even things like colds.

Are they overused? yes. Parents go in and don't want to hear "It's viral, wait it out".

However, if your kid has something bacterial like strep (my kid had it before a year) and you don't give them, the illness could kill them

I am all for not overusing them but, people have to let doctors be doctors.

This is why I don't go in right away at the first little fever. I treat the fever, hydrate and keep DD cool. If she's not starting to feel better in a day or so then I take her in... or if it's a constant fever. I hated being told come back in three days because we think its just viral.
