Yet another issue with teacher. WWYD?

Megan wore a different jacket to school yesterday. The sleeves are a little tight and shes not used to it yet. Apparently when she took it off, it was inside out.

When I picked her up, she started crying the second she got in the car that she wanted to throw her jacket in the garbage. I asked why and it took her a while to tell me what happened. Her teacher SCREAMED at her at the end of the day when she was trying to put the jacket on and the sleeves were inside out. I told her to show me exactly how the teacher said it and to use the same words. Well she SCREAMED "Megan, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? ITS INSIDE OUT FOR GODS SAKES!"

Now, I understand loss of patience. I understand how it is to get 20 four year olds dressed and ready to dismiss..but was this really cause to scream at my daughter? Megan was SO upset all night...hates her spring jacket now and I KNOW she wouldnt be behaving like this had it not happened the way she said.

Do I approach teacher today? I was just thinking to ask her if there was an issue with her jacket yesterday. I know she wont admit to screaming but I want her to know that Megan tells me things and that I know what went on, without coming right out and saying "did you scream at my daughter?"

How would you handle it? Would you just let it go?

That's awful! I would ask. I would say that DD was upset all night and kept saying she wouldn't wear the jacket and see what the teacher says.

Maybe I am too hasty, but I wouldn't even talk to the teacher. She is obviously going to deny it. I'd go right over her to the principal/director of the school as by your title you have had issues with the teacher in the past. No WAY my child gets bullied by a teacher. I wouldn't speak to my own child that way, let alone a teacher. It takes a lot to upset my 4 year old that badly. I wouldn't let her back in the classroom. JMO

sorry but that"s unexcusable...part of a 4 year old teacher's job is helping kids put on their jackets....it's what we teachers call a teachable moment. I teach 2nd grade and some kids still need help w/jackets etc. I would be really upset if my son's teacher spoke to him like that!!!!

All year it was HUGE for them to learn to put their things on by themselves. Megan has learned to put on, zipper, button, even her scarf. Other kids even tell me that she helps them get dressed. This jacket, the sleeves are like a sweater, so its hard to get off without pulling them inside out. I mean, did it annoy you THAT MUCH that you had to SCREAM at her? My daughter doesnt cry..and if she's wanting to throw her jacket in the garbage, theres a huge issue. I just know that she will deny it..but I kinda want to make it be known that I know without coming out and saying it, KWIM?

I would probably talk to the teacher and say something like "So I heard there was a big problem with the jacket yesterday. I'm concerned because now Megan refuses to wear her new jacket. Can you tell me what happened exactly?"

I feel something like that gets your point across without being too confrontational and gives the teacher a chance to explain her side.

One of the first things we taught the kids in my three year old class when I was a pre-school teacher was how to flip their jackets on themselves. As an early childhood teacher, there is NO reason to scream at a child for not putting their jacket on the right way. That is something that should be part of their learning process.

If this is yet another issue with the teacher, I wouldn't try discussing it with her at this point. I would go to the director and voice your concerns.

I would either do this or just go straight to the director. If it were the first incident, I wouldn't even think of going over the teacher's head... but since it sounds like there is a history here, I think it might be beneficial to let the director know what's going on.

Preschool teachers are SUPPOSED to help kids with their jackets. In fact, when my DS was in the 3 yr old nursery class, he always struggled to get his jacket on... he'd get one sleeve in but then couldn't grab the other sleeve. Thank God for his teacher who taught the class "Flip flop, over the top" to put coats on. Why didn't I think of that?

Except you wrote "Yet another issue with the teacher". If you've had a problem with this teacher previously - especially with losing patience - it's time to talk to the director. If your dd is generally well behaved, I can't imagine how much patience she'd have with the more challenging kids.

Re: Yet another issue with teacher. WWYD?

Thanks ladies.

I taught this same exact age group for YEARS. I too taught them the pull over the head trick..and I know they have been working with them for the year on trying to get dressed by themselves..which she does. Her sleeves were an issue because she took the jacket off inside out. Are you kidding me???

And of course the teacher wasn't there upon drop off..only the assistant whom I LOVE. Gonna see what happens when I pick her up. I like the idea of just saying I heard there was an issue with the jacket. I want to catch her as off guard as possible to be honest. Thanks again.
