Yes, more CIO questions--long

So, when you started CIO, did you start with nightime or naps? Did you do it for all naps(obviously except for stroller/car,etc)

Did you just take the pacifier away if your DC used one?

DD is 5 months and is a terrible napper so I decided I would try CIO for naps today...this morning she cried for half an hour and slept for an hour! She usually sleeps for 20-25 min...

2nd nap she cried for less than 10 min, slept for 20 min, whined for a few min and slept for another 10 min so basically not a long nap but I took her out of the crib when she woke up...was I supposed to leave her cry again until she fell asleep? I didn't want her crying in her crib all day KWIM?

I have the same questions!! Would love to hear the answers. Have a 5 month old who wakes up often at night for his pacifier and I need to start CIO soon!

I think I did it backwards...We did CIO at night, so, DH and I can get some sleep too.
Now, (recently) I started at nap time.
We are off schedule today, but, DS is up in his crib STILL playing..At least he is not crying..He's resting. I'm hoping he does doze off soon.
DS never used a binky.

With Sydney I started with nightime CIO too but Casey pretty much sleeps thru the night (even though I put her down asleep) and I figured I would try to get the CIO started during the day when it's easier b/c I have a 2 year old and I didn't want to lose as much nightime sleep listening to the crying!

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

We haven't "officially" done CIO, but had to let DD cry a couple of nights last week for a little while (like 15 minutes.) She threw her binkies out of the crib. She always does this when she wants us in there. We let her cry without them. Then when she was asleep for awhile I went in and put them back in her crib. I thought about using the opportunity to get rid of them, but just did not have it in me to do it that night. I didn't want her waking me up screaming when she couldn't find one in the middle of the night. Chat Icon I'll tackle that one later...

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

I will recommend to anyone with questions about CIO to get the Ferber book. He goes through the entire process for you. IT SAVED MY SANITY!

Let me see if I can try and help you since I started CIO on my DS when he was 5 months old and we never looked back. (he is now 21 months old).

I started CIO at night because I knew it would probably take too long for him to fall asleep at first. Just be consistant. I personally, did it at night the first night but continued with naps the next day.

The book pretty much describes how your DC is falling asleep in 1 place, say in your arms, and then is transferred into the crib and wakes up not having any idea how they got there and they are FREAKED out. It totally made sense to me. DS had to learn how to put himself to sleep in the surrounding he was going to stay in so that when he woke he knew where he was and would just be able to fall back to sleep without being frightened.

As far as the nap issues. The book pretty much says that at first, atleast, if you let DC CIO to fall asleep and then they wake up 20 minutes later the nap is over. I personally waited 3-4 minutes before picking DS up when he would only sleep for 20 minutes because sometimes he would put himself back to sleep.

Once you remain consistant these problems will disappear and your life as a mother will change forever (FOR THE BETTER!!!!!!!)

If any of you have any other questions feel free to FM me.

Really, CIO changed my life and my marriage for the better.

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

We did CIO for both naptime and bedtime. I found that with DS, if he didn't nap well during the day, at bedtime it was an even greater fight because he was just so overtired.

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

We started CIO at night. We had great success with it. DS was sleeping through the night within 2 nights and only cried for a couple of mins. by night 3. We attemoted CIO for his naps. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. In Dr. Ferber's book he basically says that for naps you do what works ultimately as long as nighttime sleep is not effected. DS takes his naps in his stroller. He went from crying in the crib for 20-30 mina dn sleeping for 20-30min. to not crying at all and sleeping 1-2 hrs per nap (he takes 2 a day). Plus, if I have errands to run he is alreay in his stroller ready to go!!

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

Ok, thanks ladies... If she falls asleep for naptime and wakes after 20 I'll go get her...

So, this morning she woke up around 4:40, after 35 minutes she went back to sleep but only briefly then was on and off crying until 6Chat Icon
I figured she was hungry so I fed her and put her back in her crib...

she was basically crying with her eyes closed, I tried sshing and rubbing her back but she wouldn't really relax so I gave her the paci and she was out in 2 seconds (and then spit it out anyway, she doesn't sleep with it)...

Did I do the wrong thing? I don't really understand the role of the paci in cio...

I'm not sure if you have, but if not I suggest getting a copy of Dr.Ferber's book. It really helped me understand how and why CIO works.

Re: Yes, more CIO questions--long

I never did it for naps. What I did do for naps was get DS used to the crib instead of my bed with me.

When I started the CIO process at night, I started with 10 minutes (mainly because it was all I could stand) then 15 minutes and 25 minutes.

You know what helped me? I called someone, my mom, a friend, and it passed the time of torture a lot.

Good luck! Chat Icon

I have it and read most of it 2 years ago and I honestly don't have the time to re-read it now...
