NO, your not wrong those are your feelings. I would question the bill as well. Why didn't the guys bring lunch, I don't think you had to buy it, though I understand feeling put on the spot.

If all those extras were not mentioned in the quote IMO you don't have to pay for it. All of that should have been stated in writing. I would think gas would have been included in the price given, as well as travel time.

Re: Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Travel time (half hour or hour) added to the total is not unusual for moving companies.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Travel time is normal. The hourly rate is from the time they start til finish so yes the half hour drive is included.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

The company I work for charges for travel time, but it is clearly stated on quotes/invoices, etc. He didn't mention travel at all?
And I think it is CRAZY that he expected you to pay for their lunch. That is just ballsy and very unprofessional.

The only thing I see wrong was him expecting you to pick up lunch.

You are not wrong. When we moved (it wasn't far from one place to another), we knew all the charges up front and had no surprises and everything went smooth. Our move took less than 4 hours (we moved from a tiny apt to a house) so we were done before lunch. I can't imagine they would have asked us for lunch.

I apologized I didn't even have water and the guys said no problem, they keep a cooler in the truck with water and food (so smart!). Sorry you had such a bad experience!

I know it's done now, but I would send an email to the company stating everything you just wrote here and how unprofessional you felt they were and they really should be honest about all fees up front and in addition you felt put on the spot for lunch when it should not be your responsibility to pay for their lunch (even if it is mcds or whatever, it's the point). I would say how disappointed you were.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Travel time is normal but I can't believe they asked you for lunch. I have never heard of that ever. Also asking you to "take care of his men" was also out of line. Tips are optional and after they "forced" you to buy them lunch I wouldn't have given them a dime.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Knowing that I was dealing with the owner of the company made it extra awkward in my opinion b/c there was no higher up to air my issue with. When he mentioned the extra fees I straight out told him in the future these things should have been mentioned up front. At that point, the work was done and it was what it was --I wasn't going to argue b/c the guys doing the actual grunt work busted their butts. That is the ONLY reason I was happy to feed them and tip them well, the rest of the comments and extra oddness of the situation didn't make me feel to happy.

Oh wow I'm sorry you had to go through that. I would have reacted the same way you did.

Can you FM me the name of the company that you used? We are moving in a few weeks and I need to start calling some to get quotes and book a date. I want to make sure I don't call this company.

We moved today from Queens to Nassau. I got a few quotes from various companies and ended up going with a very popular vendor from this site.

I booked the move over the phone and confirmed via email that the move would cost $140.00 per hour for the move (minimum 4 hours) and the cost of supplies necessary such as tape, boxes, bubble wrap etc... (I have this in writing) No other fees were mentioned..

So when our apartment was packed up, the head guy (the owner of the company btw) asked us so what's the plan for lunch, can we pick them up McDonalds.. and he expected me to pay for it!! WHICH I DID, LIKE A FOOL!!! I felt so awkward and put on the spot it wasn't even funny.

Then when it came time for the bill I was charged for 7.5 hours even tho the move took 7 hours. When I questioned the 1/2 hour I was told it was the 30 minutes it took them to get to my current apartment. Since when do I need to pay for them to get to my apartment - that was never mentioned.

Then there were fees for gas, travel time from apartment to house AND a slot for me to add my tip.

I thought this was such BALLZ.

None of these fees were mentioned in my email, so I complained about it and he ended up taking off the .1/2 hour but then told me to make sure I took care of his guys. Um ok.

The sad thing is the 2 guys doing the actual work did an amazing job packing and moving our stuff but I was sooooo turned off by the rest I don't think I could recommend them to someone else.

Am I wrong? I felt like I was a b*tch questioning the .5 hours and being surprised by all the additional fees that were never mentioned in my quote. NOT TO MENTION ASKING to get them lunch and pay for it!!

As I said this is a very popular vendor on here so who knows if this post will be taken down but I felt like I had to share my experience b/c I can't get it out of my head!

this sounds like a similar experience to one I had.. wondering if its the same company. going to FM you.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

For the record every person who fm'd me asking about the company had the exact same experience with them and I wish that was known on the site so people wouldn't be so quick to use them. I am sure by tomorrow this post will be removed b/c it is negative review on a paying vendor of this site but at least I said my peace and I am sorry other people had the same experience.

Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Im in SI and used a company that charged a travel fee of 1 hour. I moved 10 minutes from my apartment. I offered to buy lunch but then they took all the leftovers including the extra pie I ordered for my husband and myself. I also got an attitude because I didn't have water for them.

I definitely paid travel time, but it was included in the quote. I'm pretty sure we only paid 1 way - maybe time started when they got to my place and they added on time to travel back. Could be wrong and we paid both ways, but we used a Nassau company to move within Nassau so it wasn't too much time.

Re: Moving Company Situation - Was I wrong?

Them asking for lunch was ballsy! We got our guys donuts and coffee when we got back to out new house (they all brought their own lunch and kept working to get done earlier). We normally buy whoever is working on our house a lunch but no one has ever asked for it. Big turn off.

The job should have been quoted as such. When we moved they knew how long it would take and knew they would need 6 hrs given the size of our apt and the fact it would take a half hr to drive to the new house. So they quoted the job, not hourly. That way it doesn't look like they are nickel and diming. They did however say upon booking to "take care of their guys". I guess it's just a customary thing. Gratuity was listed as an additional fee at the place we are booking out kids party. I guess they just mention in case people don't know.

Wow the lunch would have been the tip or deducted from the tip. That is horrible.

I have moved several times. Travel time is normal...but you should have been advised in advance. I never use their supplies as it is always more money, except for wrapping say a couch or furniture. But that again was worked out beforehand and mentioned in the original quote. Gas in the past was worked in but would say something like unless it goes above a certain price then it will be x amount more (but didn't happen). Any charges should have been in writing prior to the move.

I have never in many moves been asked to buy lunch. Normally I offer cold water, but usually they won't take that. I would probably said here is your tip, minus what lunch cost. Movers have always brought their own.

Maybe they add gratuity as a line if they take credit cards so you can put the tip on the card. It is normally a job you tip if they did good work, so that bothers me less than other items. Restaurant and many party places have a tip line as well. If I gave cash I would have drawn a line through the tip spot like you would in a restaurant if you left a cash tip.

Why are we FMing the company? If we're upset about something we should be honest on here and not have to think it'll be taken down. I believe I just used the same company last week too. I was considering a review but haven't gotten around to it yet. If you don't feel comfortable posting you can FM me. I'm also starting to discover quite a few things that were broken and never told to me. What's the point of the insurance I purchased then?
