WWYD: Tylenol dosage (asking after the fact)

By Tylenol I mean generic brand but its the same stuff

On the bottle the dosage is listed by weight then age. She is 6yrs old and 38 lbs 2 oz 42.8 inches tall at her check up appointment as of just a few weeks ago.

according to the bottle that's in the 4-5yr range, weight wise and that's 1.5tsp vs her age which is 6yrs old and that's 2tsp

I chose to go less rather than more.

Am I right?

I gave her 1.5tsp

This wasn't to reduce a fever (if that matters) it was to reduce pain.

I was also told to go by weight not age.

IMO: no need to call the doctor if you gave less and it's Tylenol. If you wanted to give more or it was something stronger, I might call.

You are correct. Go by your daughter's weight. Hope she's feeling better.

Re: WWYD: Tylenol dosage (asking after the fact)

I have the opposite problem, where DS is bigger than his age group.
I was always told to go by weight (we've had 3 pediatricians and they all said the same thing)

Think of it this way: there has to be enough medicine to counteract the fever/disease in all her body. you would measure how "big" her body is using her weight not her age.

I was told to always go by weight. Though in the long run a half teaspoon wouldn't make that big of a difference.

Re: WWYD: Tylenol dosage (asking after the fact)

Always go by weight. And with tylenol you want to be as accurate as possible. With ibuprofen a difference of a half teaspoon wouldn't be as big of a deal, by tylenol is synthesized through the liver and too much can be bad (especially if you're giving several doses in a 24 hour period).

Thanks everyone.. hope this helped others too.
AJ is feeling fine.. with my brother moving out it kicked up a lot of dust. Something she and I are both allergic to. So her eyes were burning and her nose was raw. Normally I don't do anything other than a wet towel or ice pack but she was seriously miserable. Miserable enough she let me give her Tylenol (she's not a fan). She did feel better and I saw the redness go away. She's already dosed up on allergy meds. She just needed that little help on the suffering of it.

:) thanks again!
