For me, with kids, I wouldn't in case of emergency. If I had to leave, I would need to leave that second, not wait 30 minutes.
Leaving that second is a relative thing though - I work in the city. leaving that second, means I'm getting home in 2 hours .......to me, it's worh an extra week's vacation -

I would probably skip it, not in case of an emergency as I don't think that it is totally likely, but because it has a pretty decent effect on my day to day life. I'd rather have the time each day in the morning and afternoon rather than 5 days throughout the year... unless you have very very limited vacation time, in which case, go for the days.

As someone who used to commute back and forth to the city I say do it but then the new me who works 10 minutes from home and parks right out the front door of our one story building I hesitate...
Can you try it out for a few weeks to see how it goes and then change your mind?
Unfortunately not, once you sign up you commit to it... if they catch your car parked on site then they will fine you and take away your days.

I actually do get more vacation time here than I have had at any other job in the past (ex- standard 2 weeks) so this is why I am on the fence.

I would not do it. I never use all of my vacation as it is. I also have billable hour requirements, which is a factor in my thinking.

For me it would depend how many vacation days I already had and if I had kids. If I only had a week now, and no kids, then maybe. But I am leaning towards the "not worth it" camp. There is a reason I dont work in NYC anymore and thats because I cant be trapped without control over unreliable transportation!! Running around trying to catch a bus on time, particularly in bad weather, sounds brutal.

Exactly! Every week that's an extra 5 hours added on to your work week. In a couple months you'll make up the difference of the extra 5 days off. Not worth it IMO

I pay for parking where I work. The lots are priced according to their proximity to our worksite. There is an option for a very LOW monthly fee (it is about 20% of what I pay!) to do what they are offering you - take a shuttle in from a far off lot. I would never in a million years do this option. It is such a hassle and so much extra time (which translates to time away from my kids). If I had a 5 minute commute maaaayyybe I would do this. Otherwise? Not worth it at all.

Is the 15 minute ride in the direction of home? Do they know how oftrn the shuttle will go back and forth? if it's a single bus you could miss it and wait at least half an hour.
Does not sound worth it to me.
If they said you could work an extra 45 minutes a day (and that could be a low estimate) for the 5 extra days off per year would you consider it the same way? bc imo you should but for some reason this doesnt sound as bad, lol.

see maybe I don't see this as a big deal because I commute back and forth from LI to the city.
So would you rather have 5 extra vacay days a year for 2 years, or get out of work an hour earlier every day?
I'd go for the day to day bonus rather than just 5 vacation days.

Apparently until August 2015
ETA it would start this Fall. The vacation days would be 5 extra days per year from Fall 2013-2014, and im guessing 2014-2015
For me, that's not enough compensation. If it adds an hour onto your day, in less than 2 weeks you will have worked an extra full day (hours-wise).
5 days a year isn't enough to make up for that, IMO.
This is how I feel. It adds too much time onto your everyday for not enough compensation.
