WWYD If Daycare sent back DC's sippy with mold in it?

I already left a message for them to call me back to go over some concerns i have...

I send DS with a sippy of milk, and they have had one for there for his water.

they send the milk one back daily, but the water one they keep.

but today, they sent it back - and it had black moldy spots on the rubber straw part, the cap, the bottle itself. and it was slimy and gross. Chat Icon

I would imagine that they keep it in the fridge? If so, maybe the power went out? If not, definitely ask how they clean it...

definitely going to ask them that.
it's his water sippy too. and it would take a long longer for that much mold to develop. besides, they never lost power for more than an hour.

i hate to say it because he is finally getting used to them, but i may need to take him somewhere else.

That is pretty gross and I would be pi$$ed.. Obviously it isn't being cleaned too well there.. I have had a sippy go missing for a week in my car with juice in it. It never got moldy like that... I would definitely ask them what is going on..

it had to have not been cleaned for like, months. and unless he's drinking his water out of something else they have, which is doubtful, i think i'm pretty much decided - i'm pulling him out.

yeah... i'm pretty livid right now. there have been other little things i didn't think were too-too bad, like putting his shoes on backwards. but there are only 2-3 other kids there this summer, and not all day.

and one of the assistants tell me just today that he stuffs his mouth too much with food. i told her he still doesn't quite eat on his own yet and he needs help. i walked away thinking, who the he l l is watching him?

i have to say, i've seen sippy cups get mold in them quickly. and to be honest with you, the way some of them are designed, it's nearly impossible to get it all out unless u spend some time with a pipe cleaner cleaning out all the tiny nooks. i mean, would it piss me off that they sent back a sippy cup w mold? yes. but can i understand why it might happen? yes. Personally i wouldnt necessarily take my child out of there just for that reason alone. but hey, it's your call.

i wish i took a pic, cuz i know what you mean. there were crevices that were black, but the straw part that connects to the other straw part looked like it hadn't been detached in ages. it was all goopy.

and it was also on the inside wall of the bottle part itself. spotted & black. that could only happen if the bottle wasn't cleaned.

and like i said in my previous reply, there have been other little things that would make me think - who's watching my baby?

I'd be pi$$ed. They should have notice the mold in it and asked for a new one if they couldn't get it out. If there is one thing that skeeves is when I see mold on a sippy.

seriously.

and it wasn't just in the straw, but outside, on the edges (not the part that touches the mouth, thankfully) but the inside part. like they just kept pouring water in it and handing it to him thinking, oh - it's just water, no need to clean? Chat Icon

you have every right to speak up!!!
& I would also insist they send both his cups home everyday.

They may have a dishwasher and don't take the parts out when they run it

I wonder if they have the kids drinking out of paper cups? I would be livid as well, kids could get very sick from that

i thought of that. and hope that this is the case. although i doubt it.

they told me he stuffs his face during meal times, as if there is no one helping him out. and he can not drink from a cup on his own yet.

they just don't. never asked why, just assumed they were taking care of it.

it's an In Home day care, and the provider has a few assistants. i haven't seen the actual provider in weeks because her daughter who lives with her just had a baby. so i have been dropping off and picking up and only seeing the assistants.

she hasn't called back yet either, so i will speak to who ever is there...or maybe i should wait to speak with her.

either way, i'm sending him in...with a new sippy, and will ask them to pack it up at the end of the day.

I always took Ann's cups home every day even though it was not the norm for the room. I didn't even trust my DH to do a good enough cleaning, I coudn't expect they had the time ot means to do as a thorough a job as I did.

Ita. I can understand the inside crevices of the areas you can't get into get moldy. It happened with one of my DS cups. I saw two spots and I Chucked it. Not even the nipple brush could get rid if it. But the other areas they didn't clean. you have every right to say something!

Dont leave the cup anymore.

I wouldn't trust them with it anymore. Everything else is good, etc. I would fix that part of it.

My daycare and now preschool never keeps items more than a day. Was it a hassle to bring back and forth the bottles and cups, sure but in the bigger scheme of things it worked better for me. *I* knew her bottles were clean.

Bring the cups home everyday. I used to work in a daycare and the cups would get moldy even though I soaked and scrubbed them daily because there were parts I just couldn't get to (inside the straw, for example).
