WWYD - call for a refund or keep quiet!?!

So we just got back from our trip from FLA.
It was my family of 5 - me, DH, 3 kids (6,5,2 yrs old)

We were kinda separated 1 middle seat alone in row 18, 3 seats together in row 19 and 1 seat across the aisle also in row 19.

We were on the plane for about 45 minutes before we took off so needless to say kids were getting restless! There was a kid in row 17 that was unruly - screaming and inconsolable! Well the woman sitting next to the mother said something like "can you please take care of your kid..." And the mother got all offended and started raising her voice and then so did the woman. In the mean time my two year old - who is supposed to be in a seat was in my lap and the single seat was vacant bec my husband was technically sitting in her seat! The flight attendant came to the two ladies and threatened to bring the plane back to the gate to get off bec there were no seats due to being a full flight! But then the flight attendant saw our single vacant seat and asked whose seat it was and we both pointed to out two year old on my lap! And without thinking and to not have the plane be delayed even more - I said "you can have the seat..if it's ok my daughter is sitting here on my lap!" So the woman moved to our seat and I had my daughter on my lap the whole flight - but I was ok with that bec I had a feeling she was going to do that (it killed me that I spend all that money to buy a ticket she probably wasn't going to use anyway!)
I reallly didn't think anything of it bec we helped solve a catastrophe and my daughter was comfy and well behaved in my lap (even though she is supposed to have her own seat!) watching frozen on my iPad! Haha

Well when I came home and told my mother she was almost mad and that I should contact Delta and ask for a refund because what they did was illegal - but I don't want to complain because I feel like even offering my daughter's seat makes me in the wrong too! My mom seems to think it doesn't matter I should get a refund bec i paid for a seat I didn't use! I was just happy we helped solve the issue and the complaining lady and the mom didn't have to sit next to each other the whole flight!

WWYD - call! Or leave it alone?
My DH thinks we should leave it alone!

Sorry so long! And thank you if you've read this far!

I would leave it alone - mainly bc you are the one that offered up the seat. I really don't see any arguement you would have. You offered the seat and your child was fine the whole flight so it didnt even really effect you.

Technically your child still had a seat, just in a different spot right? They don't guarantee you can ever sit together. I've seen kids separated all the time. I am surprised they would allow the child over 2 years old to be on your lap during take off and landing. That is against the FAA rules isn't it? I would write them an email, but wouldn't expect any compensation.

I would contact the airline. What's the worst that could happen- they don't do anything for you? But maybe they will give you a credit or something. Doesn't hurt to try.

I would leave it alone...you offered up the seat. If Delta told you to give her the seat, that's a different story.

ETA: if changing seats is illegal, then many of the flights I've been on have had illegal activity occur on them. I've never heard of that.

You can try.
DH and I routinely book a 3rd seat between us for our comfort, DH is big so he spills over into my seat, and I'm not skinny either. I also hate being squashed in the middle.
Only once have I had to fight to keep the seat when a flight was oversold - I refused to give it up since I paid for it way in advance and had a boarding pass for "Extra".

The airline didn't do anything wrong or inconvenience you in any way- why would you be entitled to a refund?

I would call - what have you got to lose...they may throw you a bone - a $50 credit or something but because you offered up the seat I doubt very likely they will refund the cost of the seat. Good luck!

Technically doesn't the seat from the women who moved become your daughter's? It was a seat switch, not an overbooked flight where the women would have been bumped if she did not take your daughter's seat.

Your 2yo still technically had a seat. You just let the woman swap with your 2yo's seat that she was not sitting in.

I would leave it alone.

Seat swapping is not illegal it is done all the time...but having a 2 year old in your lap is. Lap children have to be under two. I am surprised they pulled out of the gate with her in your lap. They usually insist she take a seat.

Why didn't your husband seat in your daughter's seat or why didn't you speak with the gate agents about having your daughter's seat moved next to your husband or you. They move seats all the time to allow a small child to sit with an adult. You won't all sit together but better than alone. Can I ask why you were split in the first place I think you said you booked well in advance? Also had you said something boarding they would have tried to move some seats to accommodate you. Delta has moved us when we were split bc they want an adult with a small child. Sorry, I don't think they will do anything if you were not proactive. If you tried to get your seats changed and tried again on board you might have more of an argument. Honestly it is NOT ideal but your husband could have sat in the middle row 18, your older child across the aisle and you and your two year old together. At least you and the kids would have been in one row and you could watch them all. Also I bet if you had tried to put one child in the middle one of the two adults might have been willing to take to single seat across the aisle so both kids could have sat with an adult.

Keep quiet. You had a seat for your child. The airline did not give away your seat they just moved around passengers which they did all the time. You chose to keep your child on your lap. you could have had your DH go sit in the woman's seat and put your children in the row with you.

This..but I am surprised they let you DD stay on your lap. I offered to the same thing once and was told it was against regulations.
