Wow, just wow

So there is a "blowout" sale on Hautelook right now. I just saw this Robert Rodriguez cropped knit hoodie listed. Original price: $345.00!!! Today's price: $29.00!!! 92% off. My first thought is...they are STILL making a profit when they list it at $29.00...how much did this little gem cost to make??? I feel sick right now thinking of the items I've paid for my entire life and how much they are really worth. I mean, a $345.00 item for $29.00??? I know markups can be crazy, but I had NO idea it can get this bad. I feel dirty lol.

Re: Wow, just wow

People pay for a label. Most of the stuff out there is worth very little, unless a lot of work was put into it by hand...

But yes, most of these 300, 400, 500 dollar rags are marked up unbelievably. This doesn't surprise me at all.... I have friends and family in the clothing industry. This is common practice.

Re: Wow, just wow

It doesn't mean the designer made a profit

They could have sold the dresses for a loss to get them out of inventory or the factory could have sold them to the designer at a loss b/c an order was canceled

At normal mark ups that dress would have to cost $3.00 to make to sell it at a profit for the factory, designer and the website

On Beyond the Rack yesterday I got 2 shirts plus shipping for $40. Name brand stuff too. I try to never buy full price anymore, it totally isn't worth it.

Re: Wow, just wow

its totally a gazillion percent marked up. The company that makes the sunglasses for Fendi, Coach, Michael Kors, is in Melville (I used to work for them) and it literally costs them just a few dollars to make it.

It is like this for beauty products too. DH used to work in a factory on LI that made products for multiple companies, drugstore to department store stuff, and he says it is more or less all the same with some different fragrances added in every so often.

Re: Wow, just wow

There is a HUGE mark up. My mom used to work in a clothing factory. Some clothes in a particular lot would have designer labels sewed on them and went to the "expensive" stores and some got no name labels and went to "cheaper" stores. It was the same piece of clothing.

I saw this for myself when I was looking for a dress a few years ago. I found one in Macy's that I really liked with some expensive name label on it (can't remember which now) and it was very expensive. I didn't get it because of the price. I went to Dress Barn and found the SAME EXACT dress with a Dress Barn label on it for about a quarter of the price. It wasn't even on sale in Dress Barn, that was the regular price! Needless to say, I rarely buy name brand stuff and if I do I only get it if there is a huge deal on it.

The last one I saw was around Christmas. So maybe ever few months to get rid of stuff that doesn't sell. Beyond the Rack does them too, I remember the same Pucci bag popping up on 2 different sales and no one would buy it.

Re: Wow, just wow

This is why name brand stuff annoys me...

Unless something is leather or cashmere--expensive material--WHY am I paying so much.

I do like some name brand stuff but as I have gotten older I have cut back a lot.

I am not going to buy a cloth Gucci or LV bag, KWIM? I mean if it's leather thats one thing.

Also I feel that way about Tiffanys--I can buy gold in the diamond district for what I pay for silver at T&CO Chat Icon
