Would you take a driverless Uber?
If Uber started to have autonomous cars (and notified you in the app if it had a human driver or driverless), would you use it? I figured that this is a different question than owning a driverless car, since it's a one-time (or once in a while) thing, and not an everyday thing.
For this survey, we'll assume that it's been around for a while, and it has a very good safety rating.

Re: Would you take a driverless Uber?
For me, I think it would depend if the safety rating was higher than the rating for Ubers with drivers.
If I tried it, it would probably be for short distances at first.

Not a chance. Far too many things could go wrong.

I would want a person there, but would be OK if the car was the driver with the person to override if need be.

Would you take a driverless Uber?
At least then I wouldn't feel like I needed to make awkward conversations with the driver!

The Google driverless cars are already tremendously safer than humans.
I don't trust humans driving. I've seen too many of them, and their track record is horrendous! Every one of us is either zero degrees or one degree of separation from someone who has been in a car accident....

I don't really know anything about the Google cars, and I have a question--well, two, I suppose.
How do these cars respond to other vehicles? Do they react if they "see" another car about to hit them?

Google cars have been driving on public roads for several years, and over a million miles combined. The only accidents they were involved in were actually caused by human error. Incredibly high safety record.
They have all sorts of scanners and sensors so they can see cars and other objects coming towards them before a human would be able to, so they can predict and react to situations sooner than a human.
It's going to take a while to overcome people's perceived notion of having a computer drive a car, but it is definitely coming. Many cars already have computer assistance (lane departure warnings, collision avoidance braking, automatic parallel parking, etc).
Computers have been landing many airline jets for years, and most people don't even realize it. Just the newest planes on the bigger airports, but it's still happening.
At one point, people couldn't fathom having "horseless carriages" take over for horses. Way too dangerous, too many points of failure, no more "collision avoidance" (horses don't usually run into each other... ).
