Would you switch hospitals for a private room
ok so my sister is 15 weeks pregnant and really wanted to deliver at Winthrop bc she heard L&D is phenomonal there. Her doctor is Dr. Hanauer. shes seen her once
Well, my mom REALLY really wants her to deliver at North Shore since she's worked in that hospital for 12 years. She told some docs and nurses that my sis is pregnant today and they begged her to deliver at North Shore too. That she would def get a private room for free and be treated great. if she were to switch she'd see the Sadaty/Klein/etc practice which i see now
which hospital do you think is better for delivery? Withrop or North Shore Manhasset? My sisters always ask my mom all these questions but can't now bc she's biased.
thanks

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
No, I would not. I would only switch due to a doctor change. If your sister is happy with her doctor, that is who she should stay with, regardless of where they deliver.

both are great hospitals so she really can't go wrong, but I wouldn't switch doctors. (I delivered at Winthrop)

I would not switch. I delivered at Winthrop and all the staff was phenomenal.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
one of the reasons i chose my hospital was for the private rooms. it wasn't the sole decision maker, but it helped "seal the deal" for me.
if your sister is very happy, she should stay put. if she's okay with her practice and doesn't care either way--and it would make your mom happy, then she should switch. but it's really up to what she feels is best for her. i wish her luck with her decision

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
I would base the decision on which Dr. she likes best. Maybe meet with the Dr. that is with north shore and see if its someone she even likes. If she doesn't then there is not point in switching hospitals.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
My docs deliver at one hospital only. If I had the choice, I would go where my doctors were. Unless it were possible to anticipate a hospital stay of more than 2-3 nights, I'd like to think I could tough it out - as long as I got a window!!!!

Both are great hospitals - and both are great doctors. She can't go wrong either way.
I paid for a private room at Wintrop (Hanauaer is my dr. and I LOVE her) -- the room for the 4 nights cost me 800 - but it was the best 800 I ever spent!

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
Both are great hospitals, but I do think that NSUH is better. That being said, I would not switch hospitals for a private room unless I was unhappy with my doctor and looking for a new doctor anyway. Winthrop is also an excellent hospital. I would switch hospitals and doctors, if need be, if I did not like the hospital that my doctor delivered out of.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
A private room after delivery was a HUGE deal to me. I needed my space etc....
I delivered at WIthrop ( with Dr. Hanauer) and I had a private room. I paid $850 for it for 5 nights, 6 days that I was there.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
Winthrop is a good hospital but I think NSUH is better. That group is one of the best OBs on the island.
I did hear from someone recently though that they are switching to deliver soon at LIJ? Not sure about that - can't remember who on her mentioned that.
She has to do what she is comfortable with.

I agree! I have a ton of friends who had delivered at Winthrop and loved it! I think if she is happy with her Drs she should stick with it because its so important to have good relationship and trust in your Dr.
Also I was in a triple at St, Catherines when I delivered, the night I delivered I had a roomie but then for the next 3 days it was jut me in the big room, so you never know.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
I actually chose my practice (my old ob-gyn strictly went gyn) based on the hospital. I wanted to deliver at NSUH.
Personally, I don't care about the private room thing. If my parents or in-laws want to pay for a private room, I wouldn't pass it up. But I would never spend that $$$ on a room at a hospital - I'd save it for a vacation or a college fund.

I would not. I would stick with my doctor (espceially if I like them) and if I wanted a private room, I would just pay the difference I think.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
I loved having my own room but would not switch just b/c of it. You are not in the hospital really all that long..and if service and staff are excellent as was the case with me, I would not switch!

So did I. I originally was looking for a doctor who delivers at NSUH but then heard so many great things about Hanauer so I decided to go with her. I knew Winthrop was also a great hospital so I was comfortable with that.
Also - the private room - you don't realize how much you really need a private room - especially when you have a csection. Not to give TMI but you bleed so much that I would never feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with someone else who was also in the same shape I was in. But, I have had many friends who have shared rooms and not had any issues. To each his own.

ITA, though I don't know if I'd switch from a doctor I otherwise liked. I had a private room (all the maternity rooms at N. Westchester are private) and while I didn't have a c/s I tore very badly (sorry for TMI) and I don't think sharing a bathroom with someone would have been so safe. I also felt like I'd been hit by a truck, so it was great to have the quiet that I wouldn't have had with a roommate, another baby, and that person's visitors.

Both hospitals are fine, but I would keep with the current doctor, especially if you have a good relationship and feel like you're getting good care.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
Umm yes I would. I had a horrible room experience and will only get a private room from now on. And they are pricey so If I could get it for free, then def.
I would meet with the Dr's and if she likes them why not. I switched Dr's around 15 weeks.

I wouldn't switch doctors for a private room, but if her doctor also delivers at North Shore, then why not- I would do it.

Re: Would you switch hospitals for a private room
I will be the first one to admit I wanted the private room.
But there were other factors that were very important to us.
NICU staff my dr.
I delivered at Winthrop for the reasons above.
I did not get the private room the 1st night and hated it. I got it the 3 following nights.
