Would you rather....
do the work or not - and pay accordingly, meaning if something was dirt cheap but needed everything would you do it. OR if you had to stretch a bit for a house that was perfect, move-in condition would you buy it?

I'd rather it be in move in condition. I can deal with undoing wallpaper and painting, but updating major appliances, NO!

Re: Would you rather....
some cosmetic work. even if it is brand new and in perfect condition there are things I would probably want to change to make it my own.

Re: Would you rather....
I'd say the updating...as long as it was functional though.
If you can live with the outdated stuff for a bit and it all WORKS, then that to me , is livable.

our goal was to go for a house that needed everything but we ended up finding something that was almost move in ready. I would rather pay less for the house and make everything exactly how i want it.

i believe in purchasing for potential rather than what it is at the point you see it -- this way you can get a little bit nicer neighborhood, school district, etc for you money and in the long run your house is exactly what you taste is - not the people that lived there before you!

Seeing as we opted for the house that needed everything redone, I chose that option.

Re: Would you rather....
I bought a complete fixer upper... pretty much everything.
I didn't want to pay for other's tastes and then not have money left over to change things or feel guilty about changing things, I got the house much, much cheaper and we really had the chance to make it our own.
I'm just too particular. I'd rather buy something that cosmetically (not structurally) is a complete dump.
When I saw this house, in its disaster state (see Home community album), I fell in love a lot more than similar houses in perfect condition.

Re: Would you rather....
I would MUCH rather do everything the way I like it. I find that a lot of people on LI do not have the smae tastes as I do, so I would be much happier having what I wanted - granted if the cost of redoing everything and the purchase of the house weren't astronomical.
We have done tht in every house we have bought.

Re: Would you rather....
DH is very handy and we both love helping our friends/family fix up their houses so we would definitely like a fixer-upper . Not something that's so bad you can't live in it, but we'd definitely want something that we could fix up room by room.

Same here. Except DH is carpentry handicapped and I'm not THAT good, so we had no choice but to buy a newer home (rather than pay $$$$ to have it fixed up by a professional).

I would rather buy a house that just needs cosmetic changes. I can take down wallpaper, paint or update chandeliers but I don't want to have to update a bathroom or a kitchen.

Ditto. We don't own yet but when we start looking, we will focus on things you can't change like location and size of property. Chances are slim that we will find a house within our price range that is completely re-done to our tastes anyway.

Re: Would you rather....
I think it depends how handy you and your DH. We purchased a house that needed a complete makover inside. We did everything ourselfs with the help of our family. We did a friend of the my FIL to move the gas line in the kitchen and someone else to install the front window (masonry was needed). It also took us 5 months for 95% of the house to be done. In the last 2.5 years we have done some things too and the only thing left is the basement and the outside now. If DH was not handy I would never buy a house that needed that kind of work because labor with a contractor is expensive and I would rather buy a house move in ready.

Same here. That's what we did...we bought a house with great bones - it just needed updating. We've got 4 rooms down, 2 more to go...before we dormer & finish the upstairs
But it's been fun making it all our own. Very rewarding.

Re: Would you rather....
It depends - if I found a house that is completely move - in condition and it's done in my taste Id def go for it.
But otherwise, Id rather go for a fixer upper and renovate according to my taste which is what DH and I did. It was worth it when we were finished but very stressful and tiresome while the work was being done.

We bought a brand new house, but it was inventory so we didn't get to pick out the things that we wanted...so we are slowly changing it to what we want.

Re: Would you rather....
we bought a nice house, its completely livable and nice. BUT FH wanted to buy something reasonable and completly knock it down and build from scratch. so instead of buying a house for 700k that is nice but isnt customized to what we want, we bought a house for 425k and will put about 300k into it to make it huge and have every single feature including a home automation system that controls every aspect of the house
